In search of: marine grade degreaser

Hey guys,

Have a buddies bay boat that is raised out of the water with a sling. Well the motor that controls the sling is slowly dripping so really viscous grease onto the deck of the boat. I tried scrubbing it with soft scrub yesterday but it barely even did a thing.

Is there any type of marine grade degreaser that I could use? Simple green? Also, I have a thought about using a pressure washer on the boat, but I am unsure if it would be too harsh on the fiber glass.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot guys!

I'll pull the boat this weekend and take it to the car wash.

Be careful of Castrol Super Clean and Zep Purple. It will eat aluminum.....make sure your rinse-fu is strong.

I'll make sure to use it sparingly on only the inflicted areas. Was thinking about using a hydrogen peroxide solution to make the deck whiter. Anybody have any luck?

This is the product you want. De-oil-it or de-grease-it. It's far better than anything else. It won't harm metal, fiberglass, aluminum, etc. You can degrease your driveway and wash it right into the street with out fear of the product or grease polluting the environment.

A pressure washer will be ok on fiberglass. Put the soap hose in a bottle of bleach to brighten the hull. I am sure you know to use caution with the bleach you don't bleach any carpet or fabric. It won't harm the vinyl seats but I wouldn't hit those with the power washer.

I use simple green and oxyclean. SG is a somewhat effective degreaser. It will attack aluminum as well. Oxyclean is great for whitening up fiberglass.

My opinion based on using all the above products (which are mostly alkaline based) is I would not use any of them except simple green in certain cases. The best is "grease-off" from 'spray-nine' corp. Will not oxidize aluminum, but will remove paint top coat if left on long enough.

Had the same thing happen to our sailboat. Travel Lift dripped hydraulic oil on the deck when hauled out for a bottom job and I didn't see the big spots for several days. I used Dawn dish washing detergent to remove as best as I could. A lot depends on the condition of the fiberglass. If the fiberglass is getting old and porous it will most likely leave a stain but the sun will eventually bleach most of it out (in this part of the world anyway).

Just another one of the joys of being a boat owner...
