BTW- viewing poll results- I find the lack of zamboni method popularity disturbing!

I sit in the middle of a wooded lot. Only have about 50' radius of grass around the house, so I do expanding laps until all done. Being on a wooded lot has its advantages; only cut grass once a month or so, unless we are having a party.

This week I had to quit mowing when I was about half done. Ran out of beer.
Nice! Kinda my method too.

Depends on the grass and the weight of the mower.

When I was mowing 3 acres of fine fescue on a 60" commercial John Deere, I did the baseball diamond pattern alternating between the two directions each week.

Now I mow a small corner lot of Bermuda grass every week (all year round) on a light push mower. This grass is tough stuff, I don't think it matters as the patterns don't stay, and the mower weighs nothing.

I'll have to ask my wife. She likes to cut it.

Glad you asked this question. I've thought about asking it myself over the years.

I think the round and round is more efficient, you use less steps than turning around using the line method.

When I cut it I go diagonal because I think it looks cool but my Son goes on the line.

I'm a lines kinda guy... Usually keep it fresh with the neighborly nasty (my lines in opposing direction of neighbors)

But I've been know to get sucked into the artistic aspect and pull off a well defined checkerboard and even the diamond cut.

The diamond, takes skill and like 3 beers per acre

Gotta say i've never drank a beer while mowing...too bumpy. I have 5 acres of farm yard with some hills and ditches, and old tire ruts from equipment driving across it. It usually looks pretty good, but it is not a chemlawn, Honda pushmower type of lawn, it's a chicken freerange area, it's a Honda dirtbike track, it's a campground several times a year. I usually follow the contours of the property and end up doing the Zamboni method 72" at a time.

I use a push mower. The backyard grass is not symmetrical so I make it look sexy with long sinuous curves kind of like a woman's body.

Similar reason to why I gave up jogging, the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

+1! I had a guy cut mine twice last year, he had one of those huge zero turn mowers that just made a mess out of a job that is easy if he'd have taken a decent amount of time to accomplish. Long story short, I am back to mowing with straight lines(for the striped look of course).

A ZTR can tear the crap out of a lawn if you aren't very careful. They're hard on the landscape too. I let my wife cut the grass when I was out of town for about 2 weeks and in spite of my instructions ("Remember, when the front goes right, the back goes left. Pay attention to what's behind you!") most of the trees had scars from her bashing into them. The mower was pretty bent up too.

In Houston, before I switched to "wire a check" method, I would go back and forth. And if I was trying to impress guests, I would do a cross-cut 45 degree angle method. And we HAVE to bag the clippings down here with the heavy Saint Augustine grass.

One thing: I would sharpen the blades (Honda has 2 blades) every time. A quick zip with a file.

When I lived in upstate NY and Western Mass, I'd do the "circle" method, of ever tighter circles, to minimize the raking. I also sharpened the blade before every mowing.

Large lawn 2.5+ acres. Mulching mower, alternate, straight and diagonal. Do Zamboni style when I let it get too long. The mower will spew out a line of grass on the right side so I just keep mowing the line out to the edge so not clippings are present.

Sometimes, when I have big windrows of cut grass from my 72" John Deere, i'll rake it up and give it to the happy waiting horses who munch it all up in short order to later then fertilize thier own area.

I would really like to put my cuttings into a composter. I just don't want the smell of digesting grass near the house.
