Haven't found one yet that sees the OP as anything but iresponsible and a danger to others.

Here's one.
Plenty, plenty more.

That said, I really think you should interrupt your workout to find a staff member the next time you see it happen. Yes, it's annoying. However, the potential consequences of someone stepping onto the machine without noticing that it's on at a good clip (or accidentally stepping on the belt while trying to turn it off) are dire enough that a two-minute interruption in a workout pales in comparison. It isn't just a matter of possible treadmill burns; someone could wind up breaking a bone or getting a concussion. You don't even have to "catch him in the act" with the staff. You could just hop off your machine when you are in a recovery period, grab someone and point out the offender, then hop back on for your next sprint. You could snap a photo with your phone so you can show the person at the front desk who you are talking about.

Either this guy is really oblivious and doesn't understand how to stop the treadmill (which means he is putting himself at risk by using the equipment) or he's doing it on purpose (which means that at best he is a clueless prankster, at worst a booby-trapper). Whatever the case may be, this guy is actively endangering others and someone needs to stop it. He might be able to ignore you, but it would be tough for him to ignore the employee who has the power to kick him out of the gym indefinitely. I really do think that the "don't leave the treadmill running" message should come from someone with authority.
All that tells me is that the blame culture of no personal accountability is rampant in our nations....A sensible person would blame no one but themselves for stepping on a running treadmill...

Vinman has 30 years of gym experience.
Let's see what he says about running off and leaving a treadmill on.

Well, the question here is when the OP (Chris) signed the aforementioned gym membership contract was it specified that in the event of disembarking a motorize apparatus is he required to de-energies said unit in a reasonable time frame and if such is the case what exactly is the delineated period of time said motorize unit can be left unattended?

Ipso facto it is obvious the guilty party is the manufacture of the offending apparatus for not integrating a auto-shutoff function into said device.

When you buy a car, do you sign off promising to stop at all the stop signs, or is that assumed ?

Not to mention the gym owner for buying the faulty equipment, every participant in the building (construction) of the facility; the manufacturers of the exercise equipment that the plaintiff crashed into, (hard, sharp edges); the carpet manufacturer for lack of adhesion in the fibers; the manufacturer of the water bottle (too small for the purpose); the building air conditioner installer, manufacturer, designer (required the users of the facility the need to hydrate too frequently); the water fountain manufacturer, (water was not able to hydrate the user properly);

The real crime in this whole scenario are the people who insist on parking as close as possible to the gym entrance so that they can run 3 miles on the treadmill.

Woah, woah, woah, people. I just called the notary public that lives across the street and he said the woman is 100% responsible for what happened to her and that Chris is in no way culpable for having left the treadmill running for such a short time so his settings and stats would still be there when he got back.

The fact that he usually leaves his towel and earbuds on the machine is another thing in Chris' favor.

Another thing is when this woman said "it shouldn't be running... it's the only one with a working TV." Just proved she was all too anxious to snag it and was probably looking at the TV instead of using reasonable situational awareness.

I was just kidding... I didn't call anyone, but I was once a jury foreman on a very similar case in federal court, and the clueless woman who didn't look where she was going in a "going out of business" discount store and tripped over an end aisle display as she was holding up and waving an item trying to get a cashier's attention for a price check didn't get a dime.

But the main thing I came here to say is, you have to take anything Ziggypants says with a grain of salt.

He's clearly trolling as usual.

Plus he's bringing his lefty, liberal biases in here... thinly disguised, but they're in play regardless.

Since it's Chris, someone with whom he disagrees politically, that should tell you everything you need to know about why he's just being a mindless yappy dog about the whole thing.

I sincerely doubt he'd be pulling this crap if it was one of his "comrades" who left the treadmill running.

Seems to me like gyms shouldn't even have parking lots.

What a switcheroo.
Holding someone responsible for their actions is a lefty bias.
Ok..if you say so.

Now, talk to some gym managers, owners etc and ask them what they think of someone purposefully stepping off a moving treadmill ( it involves specific thought and actions ) in their gym.
Otherwise, nice rant.

BS. Not holding the woman responsible and saying she could/should sue is your lefty bias.

No one should take you seriously in this thread, Ziggypants.

Quit yer pathetic trolling.

And let us not forget the power company that if they had not provided the electricity to run the treadmill this incident would never had happened! Or the automobile manufacture that produced the transportation to covey our client to this dangerous location!!!

Sadly they probably would get named is she sued since tort has strayed so far off the mark....At least in Canada her claim would be sensibly limitted were she able to sue, which would be doubtful in the first place here.

Newly released surveillance video gives insight into how the woman didn't notice the treadmill was still running.....
