Best burger in America....
Saw on the local news that a local burger place has been "selected" as such. Sorta like the pizza thread, I can't wait to go wait in a huge line for a "celebrity burger" that I will surely cringe over the price....ain't happening

I know and understand it is real easy to make a BAD burger. Lots of places like Hooters have that figured out.
It is not hard to make a great burger. Quality meet with the proper ratio of fat to keep from being dry but no so much it makes a huge mess. It is not that hard really but it beyond the capabilities of many places.

Most folks dont want to pay for the better quality ingredients or wait for something fresh to be prepared. Much quicker to pickup a #4 off the shelf and move on. I much prefer to wait a little for much better quality.

Problem being by the time I collect all the premium ingredient's to make a top notch burger (or pizza) I have paid three times the cost of going to a place that serves good burgers (or pizza)... then add the time to cook said item. Note I said a place that serves good burgers, not the crazy over the top $100 burgers they sell to idiots who have to stand in line for the newest bestest fad. I did have a Kobe burger in Vegas and it was the best burger I have ever had, but it wasn't more that $15

In Lee Iacocca's first book he wrote about inviting Henry Ford II over to a BBQ at his house. HF II said that the executive dining room made the best burgers ever. So Iacocca went to the Head Chef and said "What's your secret". The Head Chef went in the refrigerator selected a piece of Filet Mignon, and dropped it in a meat grinder, made a patty, slapped it on the grill and said "Any Questions?".

I don't know...is Filet Mignon the best-flavored beef?

I'd just be happy to be in TX for a few days and grab a Whataburger.
I never knew if it was associated with a chain or not, but Fatburger across the street from the Engineering building at Texas A&M was great too.

More importantly it is extremely lean... would make for one dry chewy burger.

if i was to compete in a neighborhood burger contest..i would use a 50-50 mix of skirt steak and short rib. filet needs to be cooked rare. crazy rare. any more cooked than that, it develops a livery flavor for me. i categorize burgers into two groups. fast food/chain burgers, and gourmet. for me, i love the Whataburger mention above..or a NM Blake's Lota-Burger for fast food. yum.

I put burgers in 2 categories, simple and complex. Most times a perfect simple burger will rival the more complex, a lot has to do with context.
The best complex burger I've had is from Craigie On Main. It's $18, they have 18-20 available each day though some days you can't get it at all. It's house ground with special beef and they add beef bone marrow I've heard. It's worth $18 all day long. Found this page while researching it Burger/Bar Menu Rumor NOT True-Chef Tony Maws » Craigie On Main
