I owned that exact truck about a year ago, not quite as clean but very decent bone stock condition and a much better color plus 5-speed SR-5. Mine still had the stripes and it was tan colored.
I went through it mechanically pretty well and sold it for $1500, if memory serves. I did not have people beating my door down for it but it sold fairly quickly. I think you are high but best of luck w/ sale, etc. might be a long sit with that.

I know several guys that bought a 4x4 for hunting / light four wheeling / desert trips. It is a very capable truck for that and easy to fix. It also is good on gas and much cheaper than the first gen taco. But it usually is an extended cab 4x4.

George, that little truck can crawl over some pretty nasty obstacles with just one rear locker. My first 85 came with a locker in the rear. It was unstoppable for most of the stuff I encountered out in the desert and local mts. I wanted to locked up the front too but poor students don't have the budget. I rolled that sucker and ended it its trusty service. Fuel was about 16-18 mpg with stock tires. With the bigger, more popular 31", that number dropped another 2 miles. That was usually my average going up to Mammoth. The last steep hill up to Mammoth was a third gear grind on that poor truck. The 4 banger, 22RE motor was a bit too small or weak for that truck. Still, that's one hell of a motor.

I had an '81 SR5 4x4 like this, but without the camper shell. Great little truck. Unfortunately, with only a pair of bucket seats, it wasn't suitable for a family of three. I turned it into a Volvo station wagon.

True, and if this were Jalopnik I'd be looking for the CP button.

My son and I scour CL ads for old Toyotas (it's almost a hobby). He's got a 1988 2WD standard cab now and is looking for a clean extra cab. Some of what I've had:
1983 4WD SR5 long bed 1984 4WD standard can long bed 1987 2WD standard cab short bed 1987 4Runner (plus more 4Runners and Tacomas and now have an 80-series Land Cruiser) Clean, 1980's model Toyotas command a premium. Around here, anything not completely destroyed is $3k. Something decent is >$5k and nice stuff is $8-$12k all day long. This is what $2k gets you around here: 1984 toyota 4x4

And there is a 1990 2 DOOR 4Runner right around the corner from me, I want to steal (er, borrow it, forever) from the guy because I'm sure he doesn't know what he has there.

FWIW, the reason for this, somewhat regretted, possible sale is that I'm recently caring for the same year, '82, SR5 4X4...all original, one owner beauty, (with factory AC). Another $10K (4X4 I know) and climbing...

Let me know if you come across a rust free 4x4 1985 bed in the southeast. I'd rather replace mine than repair it.

These old Toyota Pickup 4x4's are awesome, especially the ones with the 22R/22R-E 4-cylinder, but it just sucks how they're gradually becoming rarer. However, despite their rarity, some places have a higher number of Pickups than others; they're very rare here in the DFW area of Texas, but when I was vacationing with the family in Gulf Breeze, Florida back in June and July, there was at least one Pickup on almost every corner.
My neighbor has an '82 Pickup 4x4 that he's been working on, and it's pretty well-modded. We've also had a few Pickups in the family over the years; my dad had an '86 Regular Cab 4x4, and later a '92 Xtra Cab 4x4 V6. I remember taking my dad's '86 over the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge many years ago, and it was so underpowered that I only managed to do 35 mph while ascending the bridge Our latest addition is an '86 Xtra Cab 4x4 I bought for my son a few months ago to use as his daily driver. It's got the 22R and currently has over 300,000 miles on the clock, and he loves it I bought it gray, but the paint wasn't in good shape so I got it repainted in black. Now we're working on making it a replica of Marty McFly's Pickup ![]()

Oh man, that poor lil' 22RE has to drag those big-o-tires. Are they 33's? Change out rear end?

It's a 22R, not even an RE. 55 MPH, pedal to the floor!
My father in law scored a 40k mile 1992 extra cab 4x4 V6 several years ago, in like new condition. It's sadly been turned into "just a truck" and is no longer mint, he didn't understand that some people actually find them to be desirable. I tried and failed to buy it from him on multiple occasions.

With the 22R's 97 hp, it's quite a struggle reaching 70 mph on the highway. I think it may have the stock rear end though.
