Believe it or not, we've found that a modified golf cart is the biggest "bang for the buck" for the type of riding we do. Side-by-side seating, steering wheel instead of handle bars, cup holders, stereos, and they are usually narrower than most UTVs. They fit in the back of a pickup.

2 strokes are usually easier to pick up as the day goes on.
Are you going to be riding with anybody? I've ridden dirt bikes for 40+ years and the rule of never ride alone was hammered in at a very young age. I'm starting to understand it.
If you enjoy it this first bike will not be your last, and you can decide what you would prefer.
Good luck
Currently a KTM 300 xc

side by side of your choice. I will never buy another 4 wheeler.
A lot of it depends on budget. get what you can is the bottom line
I have Polaris side by side so I am kind of sold on them. I've had very good luck with them
I think I would still love a dirt bike though if I were a few years younger
regardless of what you buy as long as YOU are happy with your purchase then I say well done.

I think it all depends on what kind of riding you are going to do. I mostly ride on farm lanes and through trails in the woods with an occasional creek and several mud spots, but mostly flatland NW Ohio, hardly any elevation change and no rocks. I'm 50 and slowing down so my nice old soft suspended Honda XR200 is perfect. I would like to try a side by side like a Razr, but budget limits me to dirtbikes.

If you want to putter around the yard or farm like me, a small 4 stroke is perfect, if you want to get big air and throw roostertails on technical rides, then maybe a bigger 2 stroke is for the "thrasher" in you. If you are riding in tight woods, you will learn to hate a wide ATV or Razr when you start scratching all the panels.

I used to be a dirt bike enthusiast, so I prefer them over ATV's. They're light and easy to transport, whereas ATV's are the opposite. The extra weight of an ATV can also injure you more seriously should it roll or fall onto you, though that's more likely to happen when hill-climbing, which you probably won't be doing but you should still be careful.

Both dirt bikes and ATV's are good for trail riding, so it's really up to you. If you're somewhat limited in cargo space, you can get a dirt bike, but if you have more cargo space, you can get an ATV.

I can back this up. Depends on the trails you want to ride. I have a YZ450F that is street legal (sort of) which is great for exploring NH, but when I get into single track or technical trails, the bike is too big and I never leave 1st gear. Plus it's a bear to start when you get tired. If you are looking to do some woods riding, then would go with a 125 or 250 2 stroke, a 4 stroke will work too as you can change gearing accordingly if you find yourself chugging along. Electric start is a plus and set suspension soft also.

If you are riding open trails like railroad beds and such, then a good 4 stroker will get you where you need to be.

Let me know if you end up getting a bike. A few of my friends are getting back into it and we all have bikes now. Most of the forest trails around here don't allow 2 strokes anymore and anything bigger than a 250/300 is a complete waste.

Hey rattl where do you guys go riding ? I'm in Marietta are you going to state lands or bike parks or ??? If I end up pulling the trigger a 250 four stroke is what I think I might like and probably a trail bike/enduro style.

Motto mountain is the closest but they are closed until after thanksgiving. I think they are filming a movie up there or something. Dirham town is the biggest but it is a good 2 hours away and the place in cedartown area is nice and a little closer. I've also been to a few forest service trails and they are nice but not a fan of two way trails. I usually go during the week so I've never had a problem anyways as less crowded then. Around here you'll want to get a woods bike like a CRFX or WR or EX, etc. All,of those bikes are basically the same bike as the pure Motorcross bikes, but they have a wider ratio gear box for woods riding. I just saw a nice TTR250 on CL a few days ago. The TTR 225/230 and the CRF 230 are basically farm bikes and too low line for your needs. The KTM 250/ 300 EX would also be a really nice choice.
