If you are spreading around a little money...and not telling them over and over how much better you are than them...they will love you.

Coming from CA has not included bragging rights or cache' for decades. Folks from CA usually come to nice places to escape CA and them try to turn them into exactly what they were trying to escape. If you tell them you are from CA, they will expect exactly that. It is just like finding a wife...if it is not an exact fit; don't tie the knot expecting a massive change in important areas (less spending, more sex or smaller waist line). You will have to adapt.

We've had a vacation home in Donnelly (@90 miles north of Boise on Hwy 55) on Lake Cascade for the past 20 years. That area, Donnelly/McCall, are beautiful in the summer months and winter's can be long and oppressive snow wise. If you like to ski or snow machine you'll be in your element. Eagle is, IMHO, one of the nicest suburbs of Boise, but I wouldn't want to live there year round. Keeping your place in the 'Nard (the Strand or Hollywood Beach area, by chance?) would be key to escaping the winters. We're converting our place to a vacation rental this year, feel free to pm me if at all interested in experiencing the mountain communities this summer.

Sounds like my kind of place!
And yes, you do kinda risk sounding like that.

Those temps are brutal. I had done a trip to NM once wondering if it was a good place to move to. I was wise to do the trip in December. Needless to say, that move didn't happen, and the temps we saw there were mild compared to the posted ID temps above.

The thermos on the cook shack during my basic training at Ft Lewis, WA. read -7F in the morning and we were camping out that night......sleep was hard to come by.

Yep, when you have weather warnings advising no more than 20 min outside to prevent frost bite or death you are a prisoner in your own home.

There's no reason to live in those conditions.

Don't let a little cooler weather scare you away.

Great weather = Lots of people. Put a jacket on and move freely about. The cost savings is worth it alone.

80% of my neighbors in Montana are from CA. The guy down the street is from Maui his 21st year here with a ski pass.

Boise is pretty mild for the inter-mountain west. It's all a compromise. Check it out in - February- January see for yourself.

I have spent time all over the country Indiana & Florida the most time. The inter- mountain north west is hard to beat for me.

I lived in Boise for thirty years. First I've ever heard about these weather warnings.

Good thing, too or I'd have never learned to ski or snowmobile or go on winter scout campouts or hookeybobbed behind cars or delivered my papers every morning or walked to my friend's house or a million other things I did when it got cold out.

I'm from Minnesota and 11 degrees above isn't even really that cold. After a week of 25 to 30 below, 11 above feels pretty balmy.

+1. It's all what you're used to.

What I find uncomfortable is higher temps - above 78 F or so.

You can move to northern Illinois or south east wisconsin, and buy property for even less. And, it's a hour from Chicago or Milwaukee. Why wouldn't you do that? Not to mention you would be close to Lake Michigan, etc...

It will get to just below freezing in the middle of the night where I live now in the Winter, and sometimes 108F in the middle of the day in the Summer. We drive up there on Wednesday, stopping in Fallon, NV for the night, and then in Boise for two days, drive back through Vegas on Saturday/Sunday. Got a realtor lined up to sample what is there. Not looking to buy yet, just checking the area out.

Yeah, keeping the condo in Oxnard (Hollywood Beach) for the Winters would be part of the plan.

Illinois, isn't gun friendly, Wisconsin never thought about. Direct flights from Boise to LAX and a three hour flight to Burbank with a connection. 800 mile drive from Boise to Los Angeles. If I consult back to the movie and TV industry when I
"retire", from Boise, if you call me this morning, I can be in your office tomorrow morning.

Finally got here. 7 hour drive to Fallon, NV yesterday, another 6 hours today. A whole lot of nothing in between. Temps are around 32F right now. Glad we drove the Mazda CX-5 instead of something else, satellite radio is nice. If I remember I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I predict you'll be in Ventura this time of the year if you go move there. 6 months and one day? That'd be May-Oct.

Please DO send some pictures. I am sure it's pretty!

To be fair, Boise and North ID aren't very much the same in that regard. N. ID is very insular and attracts the self-styled "patriot" types. It's hard to be an elitist when 95% of the rest of the PNW is politically to the left of these folks. Hayden used to be ground zero for the skinhead movement, after all. I never met so many openly racist folks in my whole life as I did in N. ID.

But Boise is a completely different place. Southern ID is more diverse and has a wider range of opinions, especially in Boise itself. I think you're right about Sandpoint, it's a nice place. I enjoyed all the times we skied at Schweitzer, too.

And much of the area along Highway 2 / 95 from Sandpoint north to the border, seems to be impoverished.

+ 1. Have many great memories of the place, going back to my teens.
