I'd add the "Chronicles of Amber" Series by Zelazny (fantasy but dips into the modern world too)- you can buy the "all in one" book on amazon. In many ways it reminds me of the above, with an even cleverer concept of Earth and many other worlds being "shadows" (variations) of the original Amber world, and the characters travelling thru those while fighting each other for the crown. All good reads. Last edited by Deschodt; 12-01-2015 at 08:03 AM.. |

"Empire of the Summer Moon".. by Gwynne. After reading this you will understand why when fighting the Comanches, a cardinal rule was to save your last bullet for yourself.

I checked the reference above on Nelson DeMille also, and might read one of his this winter. I don't mind the cold and I don't mind the dark, but I don't like the cold and dark together. So I typically read more during the winter months. Thanks |

"Truman" - David McCullough. One of my favorite writers. You will feel you knew him by the end of the book.

'The Making Of The Atomic Bomb' - Richard Rhodes. A fascinating historical account of the people & research involved in the development of one of the 20th century's more significant (for better or for worse) inventions.
Cheers JB

I've been reading Maeve Binchy books. The first one I read was called evening class, and I've been reading all and every one of her books that I've come across since. She is Irish and the storys tend to be based in Dublin and the villages around that area.

Ian Rankin's series featuring Inspector Rebus. Start with Knots and Crosses. Set in Scotland. You might find some of the vernacular confusing, but his plots and characters are engaging. There are currently 21 books in the series.
Peter Robinson's Inspector Ian Banks series. This series is mostly set in Yorkshire. Lighter in flavor than Rankin, but enjoyable. Best Les

I just read all of "The Expanse" novels and short stories. The style of writing, third person and switching characters each chapter, isn't perfect. But the stories are well setup.
It was originally going to be an online game. With the "universe" fully developed, and the origin story fleshed out, it was natural to turn it into a series of novels. Technology is fully fleshed out extensions of where we are going. No warp drive, etc. "Gravity" is from spin or thrust. People living and growing up in minimal gravity develop differently physically than those down "gravity wells". Large sub-text of prejudice and racism of people growing up in the asteroid belt and other low gravity areas. Socially, Earth as it is, is an extension of where we are heading today. People have a choice of living off the government on "basic" or going to work. Mars and the asteroids are like the former colonies. The smarter and more ambitious were in the diaspora, similar to those leaving for America. Tax issues, imposed on "colonies" from "Earth". Stories are about a series of related "changes". I won't go into it/them, since that would be spoilers. Syfy channel has created a series based, at least, on the first novel, Leviathan Wakes.

Amos is too small. Should have been Adam Baldwin...and Chris Pine as Holden. Also not sure about some changes to Alex. In the books they never said he was a transport pilot. In the books, he panics in situations not related to piloting. "Military" training takes over. They also need to highlight Naomi is a super-genius.

Recently purchased A Rumor of War. I'm surprised I didn't read this in the 1980's when I read Short Timers. I also picked up Jarhear, which is the Gulf War experience.

Many of you have probably read the great Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World. If you want to dive in deeper into the rise of Genghis, the historical novel series The Mystery of Genghis Khan: A Historical Novel, Books One and Two by Wladimir Secinski is a very good read. Based on the supposition that GK didn't do it all alone. There is a Three & Four as well once you get hooked.
