I dug out my SW DVD's, they are in a black/silver case, I presume that is one of the re-makes? I seem to remember Han talking to Jaba walking out to his ship.

I will probably see this new one... on rental DVD.

Looking back to the first (#4?) movie the 'magic' or should I say 'the force' was not really played up that much.. there was Obi scaring off the sand people (but at that point you just assumed they were afraid of him for some reason), there was Darth strangling some guy without touching him, then there was Luke 'using the force' to do in the death star.

Looks like all the other "girl kicks a s s movies where they accomplish anything and everything with little to no training while the guys are shown to be inept."

Looks like I won't be seeing it.

J.J. Abrams does have a habit of rewriting old scripts as he did with Avatar being a more colorful rendition of Dances With Wolves.

So you do have a point.

SPOILER ALERT FOLLOWS:

My first complaint was that the new SW plot was an original story rewrite with a few updates to snag a new generation of consumers.

Disney bought Lucasfilms for $4B and it looks like they're going to get their $$ back on one film. That still leaves them the entire Star Wars film catalogue, etc. :)

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER ....

I watched it with my son and grandson and it is indeed very much along the lines of the original story, including a Mos Eisley type cafe scene. We usually see these movies more than once but we won't for this one. There just isn't a need to. It wasn't a bad movie but neither was it a great movie. We're hoping SW 8 goes further.

Doubtful. Largely misunderstood, distributors get a sliding scale of revenue from 50% (or a little better on this release) down to 20% or so over time. So a $1B domestic box office is somewhere in the $0.4B range in gross income to the studios.

It sucked.

Same story as before, no new ideas. Major plot point that made me want to leave the theater.

Nice to know the new Star Trek is full of explosions...

Saw it last night in a 4K theatre. Amazing clarity and color. Basically, an action film without a lot of depth. Proves they're on the right track for future films. Better than the last few. Better use of conflicted characters than simplistic good/evil. Certainly opportunity for greater depth. But none of the annoying characters and kindergarten humor of recent films. Good start in a better direction.

No kidding. Virtually every "new" show on TV is a ball busting chick with bad manners as lead. YAWN.

They took the storylines of the first 3, and morphed them into ONE.

I found it entertaining, much like I find "where are they now" shows entertaining...

Yep. They will make it back on this film and a lot of other people will get rich selling popcorn as well, (plus t-shirts/lunch boxes/dildoes/etc.). You name it. :)

I really enjoyed it and will likely go see it again. The 4K screen resolution is great without the overpriced hype of 3D (totally not worth the extra $$$ IMHO). Anyway I thought that a lot of the "borrowed" items (and yes I did have a few "hmm where have I seen this before" moments) were deliberate choices to (1) give a nod to the ORIGINAL trilogy (and put distance between Episodes I-III and the new films) and (2) subtly say, "okay we're picking up and acknowledging the good elements of IV, V and VI - that's where we're starting and we're going to go our own direction from here".

The reviews have overwhelmingly been positive and I can see why. JJ Abrams didn't screw this one up and realized he wouldn't make everyone happy so he made 99% of people happy by giving them something that they could latch onto and get comfortable with the SW series by again (I think I can watch Ep. VIII without wondering how JJ Abrams will eff it up now, which is comforting).

I really enjoyed it. The SFX actually served the plot and not the other way around, which is refreshing. It underscores just how badly Lucas lost his way. I'm looking forward to the next episodes! Rey kicks butt (yes I know - "Lara Croft" ripoff but I don't care - tough, independent, attractive, smart and a British accent? Where do I send my marriage proposal?). ;). I wonder who her mother is - I have a pretty good idea who the father is...

Could be wrong, but I read somewhere that the Greatful Dead was the top selling band of all time on merchandise.
Irony.

(fwiw they did not hate or try to control their audience.)

Ahem,
Grateful Dead

Legit!

Just got back from movies with the boy.

Loved it then. And by then i mean living in Italy and only hearing it on a cassette tape when the original came out.

Loved it now.

I like the fact you don't actually have to see guts getting blown out. Just a bang and down. Very light on the gore factor.

I will have no problem going again and paying again.

Enjoy.

"Merry Christmas Idiots"

This guy reminds me of what's wrong with some many people today.

What a WANKER...

LEAKYSEALS951 12-22-2015 03:09 AM

saw it.
slight spoiler alert:

I usually don't like going to theaters, but I was pleasantly surprised. Movie theater packed, owner of theater walked out in front of audience and personally introduced movie as if it were a private showing. The energy in the audience was something I haven't seen since I was a kid.

Movie was pretty much what all the posters/reviewers have said. Maybe less slamming the millenium falcon into the ground, but overall, liked it. Could have been worse!
