kitchen range on life support- gas or electric ?

The 7 year old GE electric range/oven is having issues with the large top burner........we can't control the heat output. Set it to low and it's glowing orange in 3 minutes ! Typical full of electronics type of oven it was in the house when we bought the house. Kitchen also has a gas line/shutoff already plumber for a range. So we have 3 options as I see it.
1.Try to repair existing unit.
2.Replace with another electric range
3.Replace with a gas range

Am I wrong in thinking that a gas range " should " be more reliable than electric ? I say that because I think there are less moving parts ? We swapped the bad burner for a good burner and same problem so it's not the burner so the problem is further upstream. And with holiday company due in a few days my time to solve the issue is VERY limited. Advice please

No contest: Option 3.

Even if I had a perfectly functional electric range, but had an existing gas stub plumbed in, I'd toss the electric unit and get a gas range.

I'd go with option 3 as well.

Another vote for #3. Like the old commercial said "Gas. Starts fast, stops fast". Better temp control and longer lasting unit.

Option #4?

You have both gas and electric available, so how about dual fuel? Get the quick and precise control of gas on the cooktop and the steady smooth heat for baking.

OK so gas vote is leading the pack any brands to look for or stay away from ? Not looking for too fancy only firm requirements are black in color and self-cleaning oven.

Our last two homes had electric, one was JennAir built in and the other regular. I was so happy to buy this place, open up the kitchen to bare walls and put a gas unit in. We didn't go big buck like Wolf or some others, we got Samsung and I think for the price they make a good unit. Wokking on electric isn't that good.

JennAir, Bosch, or Kitchen Aide make great mid range units. They all have computer chips in there so its not so simple as the old mechanical switches or volume controls.

I just went through this. My 14 year old Frigidaire range lost its oven, and its self ignition, was going to be $700 for a partial fix and some parts were NLA.

Most modern gas ranges have circuit boards, which I think is too bad. I was told by my repair guy that they tend to last 10 years. Parts get discontinued. I would try to avoid touchscreens, displays, program modes, etc as much as possible.

You can get gas ranges with no electronics. Wolf, Bluestar, American Range, maybe some others. These are higher end brands. Or a vintage O'Keefe & Merrit or similar, either big bucks "restored" or $300 on Craigslist.

Don't try to get something by XMas, it is too short a time. Limp through the holidays and get something when you have more time. You can get by without one burner.

I ended up with an American Range 36" open burner range. It is fantastic, big heat, zero electronics (just switches, fan, etc - simple stuff).

I went from an electric stove to a gas stove this past May.
I bought a Kitchen-Aid stove. It has a convection oven (whatever that is). It heats everything alot quicker.
One good thing, if there's a power outage you can still use the top burners.
The only negative thing is all my pot handles get hot which never happened with the electric stove.

I had a perfectly good working electric...gave it away last month.
Check Home Depot or other places...I bought GE's Adora for $660...close out at Home Depot.
Plus a multi year warranty for peanuts.

Tough decision:
Assuming a dependable contractor is available on short notice,
And a gas line line is ready,
And they will install it without blowing up the house and all the guests [no fk'ng joke this stuff happens all the time]
Gas cooking is faster and takes less time.

But if you need a cheap fix for now, go with enzo1's advice.

Or order take-out and think about it.
Until after the new year.

THere's a reason the saying is "Now you're cooking with gas!"

I picked up mine at Home Depot...they loaned me an industrial dolly.
Dragged that electric out and installed the GE Adora.
If you can put on your socks you can put install a gas stove.

Go with JYL's advice: Gas stove with knobs that turn real gas valves (and you can light with a match if it comes to it), wired switches, no electronics if possible. Simplicity just works!

We closed on our current home and immediately gutted the place...it needed it. The kitchen terrible but they did spend big coin on a new high end convection cooktop. We made that a Christmas gift for the guy who helped with the whole ordeal. Went with a gas top as always. Love them.

We close next week on a new home. Like others above, we ditched the elec. and bought a gas one at Home Depot. We chose a Samsung unit but also looked at the Adora. Fortunately the builder gave us a credit due to the fact he's building the house next door and could use the elec. one there. We paid @ 800 for the gas unit.
