"Narcissist" is just a term you use to describe someone who had the audacity to believe that their experiences, opinions, or needs are as important as your own. Someone who had the nerve to try to have the last word...when you were darned sure you were more entitled to it (because you are so much more deserving).

Using the term shuts down a conversation as fast as the term "racist"...as to respond...might well prove you are indeed a narcissist. When you use the term...you are likely the one it most aptly describes. Like most internet diagnoses, they worth what you paid for them...maybe less.

There are real narcissists out there.

My mother is one.

When my daughter was little, my mother used to tell her (daughter) that she was fat and needed to lose weight so that she could be as slim and beautiful as my mother was. My daughter never forgave her and neither have I.

Yes they exist, and they are not necessarily 'look at me', life of the party, self promoting and obviously self obsessed types. They can be very destructive characters indeed.

I don't think so. There is a distinct difference between someone who looks good to be healthy, or wins to be able to say they gave it their all and the narcissist who looks good because he needs to feel better looking than others and the the narcissist who wins because the thought of loss causes pain and suffering out of proportion to the situation.

Most people can pick up the difference almost immediately when meeting a narcissist. There is something slightly off even at the first greeting of someone with this illness. And yes it is an illness categorized as a personality disorder.

^^^ My ex is like that. Lots of people have said she's just "off" when she's sober.

Drunk? She's the life of the party until she opens her mouth or she falls over.
Still says... "Nothing wrong with Me" and yet she drinks herself unconscious almost every night.

Sounds like an alcoholic, not a narcissist.

Some may argue that it takes a degree of narcissism to be successful in life.

And there we have it, the argument made in three words.

I find narcissist to be quite tiring, but they do have their moments of being entertaining.

Imagine being a baby sitter.

Children are often the most flamboyant narcissists, most of them grow out of it though.

Why We Love Narcissists
https://hbr.org/2014/01/why-we-love-narcissists
Quote:
Have you ever wondered why selfish, arrogant, and entitled individuals are so charming? These narcissistic people have parasitic effects on society. When in charge of companies they commit fraud, demoralize employees, and devalue stock. When in charge of countries they increase poverty, violence, and death rates.

And yet, there is no shortage of examples to illustrate the cultural appeal of narcissistic antiheroes, whether fictional (Walter White of Breaking Bad; Batman, and James Bond), all-too real (Silvio Berlusconi, Steve Jobs, Kanye West, and too many professional athletes to name), or a mix of both, such as the so-called Wolf of Wall Street. We are attracted to them despite their self-absorption — or perhaps, even because of it.

Why?

Not always. Narcissism can often be combined with other disorders, like sociopathy. They can literally charm the pants off of people and make them feel special. It's only later that the victim realizes (if they ever do) it was all for the narcissists/sociopaths gratification.

I dealt with one narcissist for years and so no reason to believe he had issues, until I agreed to work for him....

Thank god I'm not a narcissist.

I just have a powerful ego and am sure I'm better than you all.

The problem is that people throw the term narcissist around like the word "*********", so the meaning gets diluted.

If you've ever dealt with a real, diagnosed narcissist then you'd know it's real. And the diagnosis is not to serve the person afflicted... they are not self aware enough to ever understand. It's a diagnosis that serves those who have to live with them and negotiate boundaries

True!!! ^^^
.
Much has been said here so I'll add this:
Narcissists practice the fine art of Narcissistic Supply...it's what they go after when they take a hostage. When they've bled you of what you have to offer, they move on to their next source of NS. You are strictly incidental in their lives.
.
Also, one of the worst things you can say to a N is that they're an N. They fear being found out.
.
There is a continuum of Narcissism - at some point it is needed to survive. I don't recall all of the phases, but there's "healthy narcissism", central narcissism, narcissistic difficulty, (I don't recall them all), and Malignant Narcissism (NPD, Narcissistic Personality Disorder).
.
Narcissism is co-morbid with most personality disorders.
.
Again, once you know what to look for, you'll see it all around you...it's quite common. In the psych community America is considered a Narcissistic Society.
.
I have a neighbor who, when you run into him will greet you, and ask how you're doing. If you tell him that a boxcar just fell out of the sky onto your house, he'll immediately begin telling you about his new coin operated vending machine.
He cares nothing about anyone...doesn't pay attention to what you say, and only waits for you to finish (if he even gives you an audience) so that he can spew forth his blather.
He's the definitive bore!!!
.
The foremost authority on the matter that I have found is Dr. Sam Vaknin, a self-proclaimed Narcissist and an excellent source of info >>>
