Dangerfield was great, self depreciating humor, but I never liked DR's act...just wasn't funny to me. The highlights might be OK, but it grew tiresome in short order...
But he seemed like a really good person....RIP. |

I guess growing up with a brother that traded insults with me all my life made me appreciate Rickles type of insults. He did have a sharp and quick wit. Carson was the master at quick wit, but Rickels was close and would insult anyone. I am sure more than once he started in on someone and then realized he had gone past good natured humor. It was not a scripted performance, it was always off the top of his head.
The story with Frank Sinatra coming to his table is a pure classic. For those not around in Sinatra's era he was the king of show business. It would be like dismissing Elvis with the wave of the hand. I think it is the first video on this thread.

^^^^ I agree Glenn, my longest and bestest friends and I are absolutely brutal towards each other, and the Sinatra bit was awesome
. That said...back in the day, I just didin't find DR all that funny most of the time. He truly seems like he was a class act otherwise...one of a kind...

I liked his talk show and stand up stuff, but it did have to be taken in smaller bites.
His movie roles, he owned them, I could not think of anyone else in his role. https://seniorcitylocal.com/celebrating-seniors-on-mothers-day-don-rickles-is-90/ ![]() Quote:

I wouldn't wish his passing. But he ushered in mean and insulting language as a form of acceptable humor. Made "zingers" (supposedly humorous insults) mainstream. That seemed to be an unfortunate contribution.

Lenny Bruce had a far more cerebral comedy, and he didn't insult people for the sake of insulting them.

If you're going to contribute, there Sparky, minimally have it be somewhere in the ball park of the truth.

LB's "humor" was generally politically-based...not geared to dehumanize.

. His was not an "opinion"...he made a statement that came across as factual. Read what he said. . PS One ought not expect to be addressed with respect when one runs BS on here.

Baz,
As I recall Bruce, he didn't actually insult, he spewed forth self-righteous political views that, in his smug mind, were right-minded thinking...and anything other than that was just mindless driffle. . Wasn't he a borderline Commie?

In the 80's in a 2 month period I saw Don Rickles, George Carlin, and Rodney Dangerfield. Three different comics but all three had me laughing my arse off.
Rickles could tell a story. I liked him and Jerry Seinfeld in Comedians in Cars having Coffee.

I don't think being mean and insulting can really be humorous under any situation. I just don't get that.
I really don't find Rickles to be funny, either. I watched a few of the Best Of clips over the past couple days and didn't chuckle at all. I find Jackass stunts to be hilarious, so what do I know?

Believe what you want but professional comedians never leave anything to chance, particularly when appearing on national television. You want proof? Go see literally any stand-up comedian perform his/her act in Las Vegas (or any large established club). Then go see that same act a day or two later. You will find the same "confused tourists" in the audience getting picked on in both shows, word for word. The effect is convincing but it is staged. The tourists are part of the act. People have been planted in the audience as part of the show for decades; possibly as long as stand-up itself. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Rondo,
It's clear that you did not witness the original event nor the next night when a serious Carson and McMahon apologized to the nation of Japan. . "Believe what you want ..." . This was an actual event...not a belief. You're fronting BS about which you never witnessed.
