anyone here have a Hasty-Bake Charcoal grill?

my backyard remodel is about to happen..maybe end of august.

i am now cooking with my SS Weber Genesis. propane. i do love that grill, but i love it more if i could pair it with a charcoal grill. thinking of just going with the Weber Kettle that i am used to..(i gave mine away, when i moved into an apartment)..

i remembered the HastyBake...expensive. more expensive than my weber Genesis..but it looks kinda nice. i bet i could bake bread in it..i did with my weber kettle once.

ideas?

I also love my Weber kettle grill. But that's because it's so easy to get wood to smoke with it.

If I could only master the technique of getting a propane grill to pour smoke out the top for about 45 mins, there would be no going back.

The Weber Genesis also makes a great oven.

Are you looking for direct heat, indirect heat or option for either one?

I have a hankering for a smoker myself.

Break down and spend the dinero on a Lone Star Grillz pipe or vertical stick burner.

Custom BBQ Smokers | Custom BBQ Pits | Custom Fire Pits

Get the Pipe with the Vertical and Warming Oven option, with 1/2 inch plate offset firebox, fold down front shelf, Ash pan, Ball valve, and propane starter. . You will never need another Q in your life.

The learning curve will keep you busy and entertained.

Isn't that the one that uses the light bulb to do the cooking?

Heh. Anyway, for charcoal I've always gone cheap - just a metal tub and a grill and a lid, everything else is workable. And if I want to do a whole hog, or a few turkeys at once, etc. I have "The Box" - a Puerto Rican thing really called La Caja China - https://www.lacajachina.com/

However, I have had the pleasure of helping others cook on custom made bbq/smoker rigs - if you have the budget and need, they can be NICE.

If you had an original 1969 kenner version (in the box) you could afford any kind of smoker you could want .........

Ted, if I were going for something like that, I would fly my brother in law out, buy materials, rent a welder and it would save me money.

You had better look long and hard at the details on those things...before you say you are going to save money.. Or maybe your BIL should look long and hard before he agrees to do it for you?

I have looked at a whole lot of MFG's of those things and the price structure is all about the same. Which indicates that their is a lot of time, effort and material in those things. If they were cheap to crank out somebody would be undercutting somebody else (Even the used ones don't go cheap). Further the devil is in the design details, lots of welds and lots of cuts.

So head on out there Charlie...and lets see yer get er done.

Or BETTER as an exercise have him look at some of the vids of those things and have him give u an eyeball estimate...(of what it would take to recreate one of those things weld for weld).

There is an old story about David Brown the then owner of Aston Martin. Somebody at a party asked him if he could have one of his cars at cost. Brown said, "Sure." The guy gets the bill and it is for more than the car cost at the dealer, ya see Brown was losing money on every car. Which is to say that the time, effort and cost of recreating one of those things is not worth doing. (If you are into metal fabrication yourself it would be a different story. The facilities and time would be your own).

Where you could save the money is in the shipping..those things weigh anywhere from a few hundred pounds to over 1000 pounds and Motor freight ain't cheap.

Your best bet is to wait in the weeds hope to get lucky to find a used one.

I've had two and love them.

It's a perfect blend of a smoker and a regular grill.

It has a great method of adding additional fire without opening the lid, and overall good temp control. Not a good as a pellet grill where you can set the temp and forget about it, but a pellet grill can't be used for searing.

I grill year round and unfortunately burned up two Hasty Bakes (each lasted about ten years), and thought I'd just get a charcoal Weber for searing. I've now decided that I'm going back to another Hasty Bake.

tobra the thicker the steel the easier the welding. stick welding with plate is cake if you only need something meeting approximate dimensions and not precision fit.

question in my mind though is what about making it food safe. seems that might require certain steels, etc and there is where i'll bet it gets expensive (particularly shipping if steel not avail nearby).

Only TEN YEARS...why that is a piece of cheap junk...probably made in CHINA!!!!

I have had my Weber Kettle since the beginning of 82, the BGE since the summer of 04 and the Klose Pipe Smoker since Oct of 05.... The Kettle was 39.95 at Builders Emporium on sale. They came out of the Ralphs grocery store chain on some kind of close out deal. The BGE BBQ Galore for 695 plus 40 for the cast iron smoke regulator on top and custom ordered from Klose for 2K with shipping.

I check out the pig cooker every once in a while. I love the idea but since I've only cooked an entire pig once it just doesnt make sense for me. Love the idea.

To be accurate it was Tobra's money...

But Tobbie don't gots no savior faire...he thinks Micky D's is gourmand food.

For myself I do not regret the Q's that I have bought. They have produced some finger lickin, lip smackin Q over the years. When people reach for that second rack of ribs with a big ole smile covered with sauce on their face you just knows you you is doin sumthin right.

I hear you, I love to cook (and eat) bbq of all kinds. I priced out a DIY offset and if I work for free its too close to buying new. I still think I can scrounge material and do it.

Only TEN YEARS
In succession, ten years each (yep, I noticed the green font )

I was so happy with them, I got one for my Dad (they were cheaper then)

Being able to pull the fire box out the side to add additional fuel is a great concept...and fuel seems to burn forever...and you can get it to burn HOT for quick searing (fish).

Great grill.
