Advice on a good big screen
Remodeling the basement and the wifey thinks I should get rid of the 60" rear projection for something newer. I'm in!!!
Any advice on something around 70"? It will be mainly for watching sports so refresh rate is important. Thinking a couple of grand should do it. Sooo many choices out there that I'm overwhelmed. Thanks Rod

Subscribed. I have zero knowledge.
And the 'I hate my new TV' has me worried, as I will be buying something in January... I thought you just picked something from Amazon, had it delivered, 20 minutes of set-up, and then you're set for five years. Apparently it's not like that.

Hard to go wrong with an LED TV. The larger the better. Especially for sports. Generally, the more expensive, the better...but, and even the relatively inexpensive ones are much better than the top of the line just a few years ago. Personally, my eyes cannot perceive much difference between the real good and crazy good/expensive models. I have a 75' from Samsung that was a good price and has a great picture but has had to be repaired a couple of times (under warranty). It has a lot of bells and whistles that I don't use (internet capabilities). I have several other 40-60 inch Sony LED TVs much longer with no problems.

When I had my quad bypass surgery there were TWO 95 inch Vizio flat screens that were hooked into UCSD Heart Center's network, video system and who knows what. They had at least a dozen screens with all sorts of info and was super sharp. I have a 48 inch Vizio in our bedroom on the wall and a 40 inch Vizio as my COMPUTER monitor. Our main set is a Mitsu 72 inch 3d set with what they call advanced 2d which creats 3d! Great during any type of car race!
That's my stuff so if you shop around figure on what inputs and sound outputs you'll want as most sets can show a picture waaaaaay better than real life. If you mount it on the wall remember those suckers are HEAVY! |

My Sony 55" OLED smart TV has spectacular picture quality...definitely a big step up from the Sony LCD it replaced...and it hasn't even been calibrated yet.

My current tv is a Samung 65" Smart 4k TV.
When it's time to get a new TV, I will probably get something other than Samsung. The picture quality is very good but there are many, many times that the TV won't be able to get wifi and the only solution is to unplut the tv and then plug back in. That fixes it every time but I find myself having to do this about 5-6 time a month. |

From what I have read, the distance you will be sitting from the TV will dictate the size of the TV.
https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship And for a 65" around 2K in price: Per Consumer Reports; LG, Samsung, Sony in that order. ![]()

We have a projector in a basement theater. It is killer if you can control ambient light.

Checked out the OLED Panasonic last night. Big difference in the picture (contrast) compared to the LCD.

I had the same problem with my four year old Samsung TV. When I bought a new router to replace my old one my WiFi problem with the TV disappeared. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

We don't use any smart tvs. A cheap laptop with an HDMI can do all the "smart" stuff and then some. A Roku or similar can do almost the same. But, do they still sell dumb TVs that size?
We also have a projector for movies and the HTPC controls that as well. We could watch live OTA sports if we watched sports. For a TV the OLED is a better picture.

I recently purchased new cable modem and a very good router. I haven't had the tv disconnect yet but I amd also going to hardwire my living room TV since that is easy to do (installed a tube down the wall last year for speaker wires, etc).

Can you still get Netfix without having a smart TV?

We watch Netflix, Amazon, etcetera all over the house, including the big TV, the projector and the bedroom TV. None are smart but you do have to have a Roku, laptop, PC, tablet or other device to connect to the TV. The nice thing is you don't have to worry about the apps getting out of date, you can watch downloaded videos and so forth. Less to break on the TV as well.

I am not sure if you can BUT here is something scary....the Netflex tech people can look at your system remotely and see what cables you have, what TV or Bluray player and who knows what else! When we first hooked it up several years ago I had a "slow" HDMI cable but did not know it, the tech support lady had me fire things up and immediately told me what speed cable to get! Scary
