Costa Rican version for breakfast is called Gallo Pinto whereby the beans and rice are all mixed together (usually black beans) and it's sort of dry. Cajundaddy nailed it on the rest of the world. Very common in the Caribbean where the beans (red or black, even lentils) are "soupy" over white rice. Staple food down here....

I dunno...there used to be a great Cuban restaurant here...only place north of Tampa to get a real Cuban sammich. I was sitting at the bar, having a beer....sammich ordered to go. The 20ish son was explaining the origin when I asked...Que es! Gave me a free sample....simply delicious. Place closed shortly thereafter....a hidden gem in a strip mall

What rice you buy makes a big difference. My wife found Himalayan Royal Basmati slow cooked long grain rice. Wow, when prepared properly, you could eat it by itself with no seasoning, it's really good with just about any meal including beans.

That Royal Basmati is very good, sort of nutty flavor.

We had that last night. Soak the beans all day, prior to putting them in the crock pot, put sliced onions, garlic and green onions with sliced smoked pork sausage( black iron skillet) and cook it all down. Put the beans in the crock pot, some broth from the boiled down smoked turkey carcas, add the mixture. Cooks all night on low. SO very good. And no I don't put it hot sauce!!

Rice and beans are also really cheap and you feed lots of kids for not much money.

I am on the paleo/atkins diet. I cheat with light beer which are 5 carbs each. Perspective. 1/2 cup of almonds - 6-8 carb grams. They are massively satisfying. Cottage cheese - 4 grams per half cup. It's ice cream. 1/4 cup of lima beans. 22 grams of carbs. Blows you out of the water as far as numbers.

Traditionally, red beans and rice are a meal for a Monday because Monday is the day you do your wash and don't have time to cook. That's why you'll find that restaurants in the South Louisiana area typically serve red beans and rice as the daily "special" on a Monday.
As a quick meal I used to buy the Zatarins or Tony Chachere Gumbo mix with rice in a box for about $2. Add a pound of authentic Andoullie sausage and a 10 oz. can of chicken. 20 minutes later you are eating. Then for the next 3 days my feet and ankles would feel like they were going to explode from all the fluid in them due to the mass dose of sodium I took from the gumbo. Same goes for boiled crawfish. The entire New Orleans/South Louisiana region sees a sharp increase in heart attack/stroke issues every year during crawfish season due to the liberal use of salt. |

I once knew a guy who worked for a place named "Po Folks" in the kitchen. I don't even know if they are still in business. They had great beans & rice, so I asked him for the recipe. He brought me the recipe They used but it was for ten pounds of beans.

Divide it by ten! Most bags of beans at one pounders.

Yep, that's what I did, but I still have his original hand written recipe. It's kind of cool.

As has been stated, beans and rice (together) are staples all around the world.
Cajuns eat red beans and rice, often with sausage. Mexicans have beans with rice Cubans eat black beans and yellow rice. In the southeast US, there's Hoppin' John which I understand has it's sources in Africa being brought over by the slaves. In the Caribbean, the have what they call "rice and peas" the peas are what we would call beans. The middle eastern / Arabic countries have bean recipes that they server with rice.
