On eating whole animals. My pointer ate a whole northern shoveler duck. Head, wings, feathers and all. After throwing up the head and a few feathers, it took about 3 days to make it through. There was a huge bundle of feathers, like a log that she passed. It was amazing. Kept her hydrated and fed her small portions frequently. I was sweating bullets. Unlike bones, feathers are not digested, they need to make their way through.

My problem is not what they eat
my problem is they play with the fud
and occasionally the fud get's away.

So on sunday i'm sitting in the couch, and i hear a noise , under the couch.
I look to the left and see dumbass 1
I look to the right and I see dumbass 2

1+1=2 and I know i only have 2 cats
So what is the noise under the couch?

A terrified Wabbit.

But that's rare.. usually just find dead, half eaten or mauled corposes of mice, wabbits, rats, pigeons, even some ferret babies(Raided a nest, got the babies and an abcess from mother ferret on his head, that was fun at the Vet.)

My then kid sister and nephew cam over to camp out in my garden once..like 12 year olds..Boris was in his peak and so was the rabbit population.. Imagine my wake up when 6 in the morning, at first light the kids wake up, get out of the tent and find a dead wabbit.. and both shriek.

As much as I love animals (and I do think dogs are cool) this sort of stuff grosses me out. Dogs in particular are inherently scavengers and pretty filthy animals - they will roll in dirt, eat poop, garbage, carrion, you-name-it. I had a gf that used to let her TWO (because one wasn’t enough, apparently) gigantic greyhounds sleep in her bed. These dogs were sweet but no exception to the above - regularly eating whatever disgusting stuff they happened across. Umm... no. I refused to sleep in that bed myself (sorry, I don’t want my head on a pillow that’s had dead / poopy / garbage-y slobber drooled on it). Needless to say that kinda cramped the relationship a bit.

I like dogs but they’re pretty disgusting creatures at their core. Some are better than others. At least my cats will only eat what they catch - that’s pretty nasty enough and it doesn’t really happen too much anymore since they’re strictly indoor animals and kept well-fed (although one did catch a little lizard the other day).

Good luck!

My small dogs kill squirrels, chipmunks, and mice but don’t eat them, they carry them around and play keep away. It’s interesting to see that they instinctively know how to kill an animal. Owen, the miniature schnauzer loves to take a walk along the road a couple days after a good rain and eat the dried worms that collect on the pavement. Our Golden Retriever couldn’t be bothered to kill something or eat anything that isn’t put in front of her.

We have Dachshunds. They love to hunt critters. Our current male is a decent mouser. He will alert me to a new invasion of mice in the back yard. He has caught a few mice. One was gone it way under 60 seconds. One mouse was chewed and dead, but still in his mouth. We "tricked" him into putting it down for a treat. I grabbed the carcass and flushed it.

When he is on the hunt for mice, I put out traps to kill em all ASAP. I keep mouse traps set in the garage in places the dogs can't get to if they get out to the garage.

I figure dogs have been eating small critters for hundreds of thousands of years and the wolf, that dogs are descended from have eaten small and large critters for millions of years. Our dogs have their rabies and other shots. We don't encourage a diet of critters, but I don't worry one iota about it.

I guess we shouldn't feel so bad our beloved pets eaten by foxes or coyotes. Just doing what they do.

Our beloved pet is nothing like a vermin mouse or rat. There is a strong emotional attachment to our pets, and loathing of a mouse or rat the is happy destroying you car or food.

Ed and I just kinda stood there looking at each other. I went back to trimming the laurel.
Thanks, now that was some fun reading, Fritz

Cowboy would jump straight up and dive head first into snow drifts. Often burying his whole head. I finally got close ehoungh to see what he was doing. He had a little mouses tail hanging down his chin. He tilted his head back and Schlurped it up like spaghetti.

Gross.

The cat does catch and release with birds in the house. It was worth the money to buy a butterfly net. I grab them from the ceiling fan and let them outside. Most fly off like they’ll survive.

I saw a cat of mine bite one in half and swallow...followed by the other half...

My Airedale lived for the sport of catching Rats or anything in HER backyard...she did like cats though but they wouldn't come near her...she was raised with a cat and would get upset with them when they wouldn't want to play with her...she must of felt she was a cat to...That dog was quick...

The Airedale and cat would work in tandum...the dog would catch the rat, smack in on the ground about 4 times, set it down, the cat would come and pick it up and over the wall she would go with it...what she did with it I didn't want to know?

I even saw the Airedale and cat of mine go after a cat together that had wandered in the backyard...

Well at least ED the dog didn't come up to your wife while she was asleep and slurp her on the face after raiding the cat box for tootsie rolls....

Dogs have been eating rats for 1000's of years w/o any problem ( the rats might hvae aproblem with it!) I would be more worried about the pellet or bullet or what ever killed the rat, (poison?) than a dog eating a rat.
