One that surprised me was "Open Range". Certainly better than some on Theo's list in the thread's first post.

I thought about Open Range...it did have its moments...

Joe Kidd...which was so so..typical Eastwood vehicle.

And if you're gonna mention Tom Horn, might as well throw in "Judge Roy Bean", too. Both pretty mediocre movies, but made better by dint of a great actor in the leading role....

But this is a great discussion....keep it going!
"Not dirty Bad Bob..the Mexican but the original Bad Bob, the mean one, the albino"....

Judge Roy Bean had some pretty spiffy dialogue. Quite memorable I dare say, what.

A newer "western" I liked was Blackthorn. It follows up on Butch Cassidy, 40 years later.

Don't know if it has been mentioned, but is "Dances With Wolves" considered a western?

Interesting. I just looked it up on Wiki and here's what they had:

Quote:
Twenty years after his disappearance in 1908, an aged Butch Cassidy (Sam Shepard), living under the assumed name James Blackthorn in a secluded village in Bolivia, decides to end his long exile and return to the United States after learning of the death of Etta Place. He writes to her son, Ryan, who is in fact his own son, telling him he intends to return.
I thought Etta was Sundance's chick.

Regardless, thanks for the head's up, Bryan - will have to look for this one.

I think I saw this movie at the theater...sort of an independent, "artsy" theater. Was this a black and white film? And was one of the characters a cannibal? LOL!

3:10 to Yuma (new version) is by far my favorite western. In addition to great performances by the leads Ben Foster's performance was one of the best in modern cinema.

Unforgiven is good. Far from the best, but good.

The Searchers is fantastic.

Don't care for Liberty Valance. Jimmy Stewart just doesn't work in a Western for me.

Tombstone is better than the credit given to it.

would the REVENANT be considered a western?

i love me an old timey country movie, but i think Hollywood needs to step it up. the new Magnificent 7 was very mediocre.

i love the outlaw Josey Wales..
