I like both versions, for different reasons; though the shootout being true to both has a lot to do with my opinion.

I thought the one in Anaheim was OK; we stayed there when we went to Disneyland.

Ahh, The Quiet Man is great! The Searchers is my favorite Wayne movie (but not by much).

Man Who Shot Liberty Valance or the Searchers is a toss up for best with The Duke
+1 to Valance, but on my list because of Lee Marvin.
Watched "Hostiles" this past week, advertised as the best western since Unforgiven..it seemed rather plodding

Brooks wanted Frankie Lane to sing in the sound track, but when he found out what Brooks was doing turned it down.

Richard Pryor did a lot of the script (hard not to see that huh!), and was wanted by Brooks for the role of the Sheriff, but Pryor was thought to be too unpredictable by the studio execs.

As stated earlier the Lilly Von Sthup character in Blazing was a parody of Marlene Dietrich
's Frenchy role in Destry Rides Again..with Jimmy Stewart 1939

Stewart, Hepburn and Cary Grant teamed up in 1940 for the Philadelphia Story where Stewart won an Oscar.

Which version?

Last Train To Gun Hill...with Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn had a very similar plot..of a sheriff come to town to pick up the wayward son of an old friend who is the big man in town. Needless to say the plot thickens.

Kind of an obscure selection - and perhaps not a 'western' per se, but "The Big Country" (1958) starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Charlton Heston, Chuck Connors, and Burl Ives was a pretty good one. A lot different movie (in a good way) than what is being produced nowadays.....

Speaking of Chuck Heston.......

"Major Dundee", directed by Sam Peckinpah, starring Charlton Heston, Richard Harris and James Coburn....

Blazing Saddles. Support your local sheriff. Support your local gunfighter.

NO! That was a pop culture movie...heavily stylized.

The Sting with both of the same actors was better.

Hombre with Newman was better.

One Eyed Jacks with Brando also fits that off beat Western genre

Another movie that should be mentioned in the same breath as The Wild Bunch is The Professionals with Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, Woody Strode, Jack Palance as the Revolutionary, Claudia Cardinal and Ralph Bellamy as the rich old husband.. Four operatives are hired to retrieve a wife that has supposedly been kidnapped..only to find she went willingly.
