Here it is perfectly normal NOT to (be allowed to) use the bathroom if you are NOT a customer. Nobody making a fuss over that. Everyone understands that and does not bother anyone.
It was not over the bathroom.

Starbucks bathrooms are regularly restricted to paying customers only.

It was about them being asked to leave for no apparent reason then being trespassed.

It goes against the very culture that is at the core of coffee shops including Starbucks, come in, hang out, you are welcome even if you don't buy.

Last time I was in a Starbucks, because it was my only choice, half the people, college town, were non paying customers just hanging out killing time or using the free WIFI.

My son has math tutoring every Monday evening. His tutor operates out of a local Starbucks. He is there 3-4 hours a day tutoring kids. Maybe he buys one cup of coffee if that. He's been doing it for years.

It is a culture they foster.

So the question comes down to "what was different here?"

Maybe Sniper was in charge of that store?

No, nevermind. There was no mention of monkey rolling in the story.

The Starbucks along Pacific Coast Hwy here have been overrun by the downtrodden and homeless. They shuffle in with their bags and park themselves in the chairs and get free cups of ice water. Good for Starbucks for welcoming homeless people into their little sanctuaries. I'll frequent the Starbucks away from PCH for my coffee.

Not really...

It was discovered that this particular location has a problem with loitering (not surprising for a restaurant in an urban area), and the manager in question has had potentially dangerous altercations with loiterers in the past. Then we find out that the two men were warned that the cops would be coming and they responded, "Go ahead and call them. We don't care."

The 911 call placed by Holly, in which she says, very reasonably, "I have two gentlemen in my cafe that are refusing to make a purchase or leave.” This is significant because it confirms that the men were given the option to at least buy something and, incredibly, they refused.

I've never seen this at Starbucks here, usually we see this at the library... That being said, in the past 10 - 15 years Starbucks has gone from being a little bit upscale to 'run down' and 'low rent' whereas McDonalds has transformed in the opposite direction.

My coffee preference is as follows:

Small Local Roaster -> Starbucks -> McDonalds -> Gas Station swill.

Very common here to see "restrooms for customers only" signs.

I thought it was common knowledge most fast food joints and/or supermarkets have unlocked restrooms?

FWIW even this here middle age white guy and been turned away from bathroom usage... even here in uber liberal SoCal (thus why I have learned to hit Micky D's or Hack in the box if I need a restroom away from home)

All Starbucks have a loitering problem.

It's part of their thing.

That this particular location may have had problems with potentially dangerous loiterers may to some degree depend on individual impression. We don't all perceive the same situation through the same lens.

Maybe they were not as potentially dangerous as the manager may have projected, or maybe they really were. Maybe the attitude of the loiterers is a direct reflection of / reaction to how they were being handled, or maybe not.

How many of those prior encounters resulted in Police being called? Few, some, all?

Point being, were they treated the same or differently than others during similar encounters in that specific location. If the same was there any common thread that determined how a non paying customer was treated in that location?

Without any of that info what we have to go on is two guys were perp walked from a Starbucks for engaging in behavior that occurs every day in every Starbucks in the country.

That requires the question to be asked.

Why?

Many public places have code-locks on bathroom doors.

Also, every restaurant type place is always seeking a balance of customer load. Many popular places spend big on space appointments And... have ridiculously hard seats for their customers. (your ass will want to leave)
OTOH, a place that has little traffic will seat people next to a window (and encourage them to stay long) in an effort to create a happening appearance.

The McDonalds under the Space needle (Seattle) has a sign "30-minute limit" --a McDonalds !

Point is, what culture is fostered will change depending on circumstances.

My guess is that Philly S-bucks is a bustling place. No accommodations for craigslist meets or whatever.

Their chairs are famously uncomfortable. This is intentional. They don’t want your ass parked for more than an hour.

Dunno about Seattle but Micky D's here have free WIFI... and unlocked bathrooms!

Matter of fact I'm guilty of loitering in their dinning room, not buying anything, poaching their WIFI, and using their bathroom. I'm a bad, bad man!

What was the time frame of this incident? They needed a restroom but hung out long enough to argue with the employees to the point of pissing them off where the called the police then long enough for the police to show up. All while holding it in?

Ah, I misunderstood! I dont know where I got the bathroom story from! Thanks!

And now I see that they close 8,000 stores for half a day for an "anti-racist" training for the employees, the stores are not closed forever.

i'd love to know how they picked the 8000 stores..i think i would have closed them all for the class. so you dont call out the ones with the issues.

and i just pissed at the Starbucks without buying something.
it meets my life mantra: better anywhere than in my pants. i had to pee bad.
