Shifting lever? problems

Car is a European 62 T6B. Had trouble matching the lever to the pics in Stoddard and the factory manual. The shift lever assembly has the tranny lock and a keeper 'wire'. It looks like the C lever but without the heater levers. I have all of the parts to rebuild the assembly to either C or T6B. The spring under the 'ball' looks like a B. Smaller on one end and wider on the other.

I assembled everything to the C specs using the spring noted above.

When the lever is in 1st or 2nd, the lever moves only slightly when pushed from side to side.

Put the lever into 3rd or 4th and it flops all over the place.

I rebuilt the coupler and the shift lever.

If it is in 3rd and you move the lever to the left and then pull it down as if to go into 2nd, it will go into 4th. If you hold the lever to the left as if going into 1st, it goes into 3rd. To get it to go into 1st or 2nd, the lever has to be in neutral and moved all the way to the right and then back to the left and either forward or back. Selects the correct gear.

Since I have rebuilt everything, I am at a loss. Help, please.

Not that this is going to help you much but I found that the adjustment / alignment between the lever rod and the trans is really touchy. Twice I have had mine apart and both times it was a bit of a hassle to get the shifting pattern correct. Perhaps a little trial and error will help....
