82 911SC paint mystery
I attempted to buy some touch up paint for rock chip repair. When the paint arrived, the color was not very close at all. My car has the Rosewood Metallic Paint" option. It says so on my copy of original window sticker.
Now the story gets interesting. I have discovered that there were two Rosewood Metallic shades - red and brown. Mine is obviously red as you can see in pics. Theirs was definitely brown. However, all the experts say my color wasn't even available in 1982. I beg to differ. Also my paint is absolutely original. It has obviously never been repainted. All original door jamb decals are in place but there is none with any paint code. The window sticker doesn't mention red or brown. I may have a special order from the factory car. I just don't know. Anyone familiar with Porsche paint codes enough to offer any advise? Thanks |

I read as you are not the original owner - you just have the original sticker. That there are door jam decals/stickers means nothing - one can easily replace these with "original" stickers, as I had done when I had my 911 repainted. That you are missing the paint code suggests to me that perhaps the car WAS re-painted, and that the metal paint tag was removed during the process.
mine, in driver door jam: Jason

I would guess a Prince fan repainted it at least once

In 82 rosewood metallic was a standard color option. I agree it was definitely more brown that the current color of your car. As the copy of the window sticker has Rosewood Metallic listed I would assume your car came in the standard Rosewood Metallic color. If your car was anything other than the standard color it would be listed as code 98 or 99 "color to sample". I highly suspect yours has been repainted.
Here is a link to the Porsche Classic color sample card. |

That does not look like Rosewood.

The metal paint code tag in the drivers door jamb went away for the later SC's. It was replaced by a paper tag on the engine bay cross-piece where all the other engine bay stickers are. The paint tag was at the far left.

Good info Mark.
Whatever color mine is, it was definitely done at the factory. There is no indication of any other color of paint under the hood, inside the entire engine bay, in the door jambs, etc. Also the leather separators they put between the body panels are still in good condition and have zero paint on them. It would have been impossible for them to be properly masked as complete disassembly of the body would have been required. Not likely Getting the proper paint is no big deal. I will get our local paint store to computer match for me. It would probably match better anyway. I'm thinking the car may have been special ordered from the factory although the window sticker mentions nothing.

in '82 the paint code should be on a sticker in under the hood - but it looks like you have the wine red metallic.

I have copy of original factory window sticker for car in front of me.
Second item down is "Rosewood Metallic Paint". It was a $645.00 option. No mention of "Red" or "Brown". It is definitely an official Porsche document ("Port of entry Wilmington"). And just looking at car tells you that it is the red and not brown Rosewood Metallic. You can use Google and find cars with both tints. The fact that there were two different Rosewood Metallic tints was news to me. I'm still leaning towards a specially ordered car. Non-standard color could have been preferred by and ordered by a favored customer. Bottom line is I have an official Porsche document that goes against every published color chart for 1982 or any other nearby year for that matter. And every nook and cranny inside and out is the original color so it definitely came this way from the factory Beats the heck out of me ! |

Is there any evidence of a sticker in the engine bay? It wasn't a gold aluminized sticker like the others. The ones I've seen were plain paper and so not very durable.
Whatever color you have there, it's beautiful. Mark

At the risk of seeming like a silly question - does the VIN on the window sticker match the car's?

Hi -
My dad drives an 82 SC targa that looks just like GothingNC's example. Color is called Palisandermetallic (U9). I believe that translates to Rosewood, but could be wrong. Sticker is on the far left of engine bay cross piece like Mark said. Cheers! |

Like I say, the leather between the panels is free of any paint. I don't see how it would be possible to mask. You would almost have to disassemble car. Not saying that hasn't been done in past though.
The VIN on window sticker matches car. There is red tint Rosewood all inside the front luggage compartment. On brackets, the underhood, etc. In engine compartment, all painted surfaces have the red tint. Hopefully one day I can find a Porsche guru to put their eyes upon my car to look for any missed clues. |

Still here

I doubt there are two different paints for the same color code in the same model year.
But who knows. |

About the only thing that seems possible to me was that someone special ordered the paint from the factory (probably from another model year) and it was listed on window sticker as Rosewood Metallic as it was probably the closest match.
I may actually have a unique one of a kind (valuable?) 911SC. I should be so lucky... I'll simply drive around...wondering....(lol)

Have a look at https://www.rennbow.org/index.cfm?event=colorwiki.paintchips
Not sure if this applies to the 82s - is there a factory option sticker under the front lid or in the service book listing a paint code? Is there a point code listed on the window sticker? The apparent disconnect between the car’s colour and the window sticker reminds me of a friend’s V6 Fiero factory order back in the day. He ordered a red car. The window sticker said it was red. But it was the most silver looking red either of us had ever seen. No-one sweats the details like GM. |

My 82SC has been repainted but I believe it to still be the actual Weinrot/Wine Red Metallic. It does look purple in some light, but yours appears to be more purple than mine has ever seemed. Here's what mine looks like:
