Wheels - original options in 1984 - 911
Good Day,
My search is showing that my wheels may not be original. I have 5 spoke alloy wheels 8 inch rear/7inch front, that are car matching white. Car is Grand-Prix white. The wheel paint needs a little love, and I wanted to keep it a factory color. My research into the Porsche web site(s) - does not show white as a color for the 1984 911. Anyone have any knowledge to share on this? Thanks, Dave

Fuchs wheels were available in Grand Prix White most years. The option is code M348. To see if they are original, you would need to see if 348 is present on your option sticker.
If you have no option stickers, you could deduce if they are likely original or a dealer upgrade, but won't be able to positively identify them as original. Fuchs wheels were a common dealer upgrade if the car is a North American car. Colored Fuchs wheels were also not uncommon as a dealer upgrade. Last edited by FrenchToast; 09-28-2019 at 05:48 PM.. |

Are they 15 or 16 inch?
At that time, I believe the 8 inch Fuchs were not an option on the 3.2 Carrera. The factory optioned 16" wheels were 6" and 7" wide. If they are 15 inch diameter, then yes, they are very possibly original to the car.

Thanks guys,
No option sticker to be found, but my certificate of authorization lists "forged alloy wheels". They are 8 inch and 7 inch. Thinking they might have been a dealer upgrade as the car has many......whale tail, can can red interior, upgraded radio, ....etc.

As one mentioned, color matched wheels were available as a factory option. They were also a common "dealer" option. That said, Porsche has always been willing to meet unusual customer demands through their "special wishes" department. Paint to sample? Special interiors? Backroom engine mods (ok, this was mostly European markets due to US Emissions standards) but almost anything was possible.
While we can't confirm if they are original to the car without a buildsheet/option sticker sheet, at minimum, pull the wheels and check for the date stamp on the backside. If a year other than 84 or maybe even 83 as Porsche would have used up any leftovers, and depending on your build date, these could be original to the car. 15" - 7" front and 8" rear were standard (Fuchs) 16" - 6" front and 7" rear were available (Fuchs) 16" - 6/8 or 7/8 could be purchased from dealer or ordered with the car (Fuchs, or aftermarket such as BBS) Can Can red interior was also factory availlable. Spoilers, when ordered from the factory, came matched with front and rear. In the 1980s, radio was likely part of "US specifications" and could be deleted or the dealer might upgrade for the buyer. Many dealers in the 1980's spec;d their orders to what was selling. Sunroof, aftermarket alarm, upgraded radios, gold BBS wheels, Spoilers. Occasionally bold color combos.

Your Carrera sounds much like my 85. It too is Grand Prix white, with 15 inch 7&8s Fuchs, with the wheels painted to match. The 15 inch Fuchs are still popular with the folks that like factory stock cars, and the autocross folks, and the VW guys. 15 inch tires for a sports car are the challenge to find. Lots of options if you want a treadwear 80 autocross special. No much choice for an all around performance tire.
I finally gave up, and bought 17 inch Euromeister wheels. My properly date coded 15 inch Fuchs are up in my attic.
