How to Color Match Undercoating?

Hi Everyone,

I'm getting close to applying undercoating to my '72. The majority of the write-ups I am seeing is discussing just black out of the can undercoating.

I would like to have my undercoating match the color of my car.

Do I just put base coat over the Schutz undercoating or is it possible to get the undercoating color matched that will have the same texture or close to it as factory?

A side note I'm also interested in where to apply the undercoating in the engine compartment and the trunk.

What areas were coated with undercoating in the frunk in '72?

What areas were coated with undercoating in the engine compartment in '72?

Thanks for your help,

Rodney

Porsche used a tan undercoating which is NLA. Upol gravel guard sprayed at 60psi. Is close. Porsche didn’t paint over the chip guard it was mainly overspray. Talk to Porsche 962 in paint forum he can give you the low down.

72 is an interesting year.. I have seen some 72's that have been blk in the engine compartment wheel wells, and some areas of the frunk, while others, typically late 72 have been paint body color in these areas. The assumption being because they were late on the production line as the 73s were beginning production. The 73 cars were body color in those areas.

As far as your second question, I think you're confusing something as color matching has nothing to do with texture of the undercoating. The factory undercoated, seam sealed and then painted.

As stated by Dpmulvan "Porsche used a tan undercoating which is NLA." The grey is no longer available either therefore The UPOl product mentioned is the closest match. Also not that in some areas of the wheel the undercoating was also brushed on.

Personally after pulling apart and/or repairing so many of these cars I'm always amazed at how many people sweat the details in trying to make the perfect, yet the factory, as a then small auto manufacture didn't go to that level. If you look closely you can find weld spatter and/or wire, and numerous non-uniform details between cars of the same year and of course different years.

So in essence use the product that is working best for you, and yes, you can paint over it.

Rodney,

Here is the link when I asked a similar question.

Upol Raptor can be used. It is tinted using the same paint tints as the paint. I have a local supplier that can do this.

I ended up using a product called Monsta-LIner. It is popular in the offroad world. You can see what I did starting in post 313 in my build thread. I sprayed with an undercoating gun.

Here is another good one.

onboost - thanks for the reply.
My early '72 had black engine compartment, wheels wells and trunk. Right now I am spraying the underside with Wurth black and using their gun and going for minimum texture.
My plan is to do the wells with the same, but going finer on the texture.
Very happy with the results so far.

Thanks everybody for your help!

Jamie, I couldn't tell in your pics, did you put undercoating inside the entire trunk or only in select areas?

Thanks,

Rodney

Rodney,

I put the entire tub in white epoxy. Then I did the undercoating on the entire trunk, under dash, wheel wells, front nose, smugglers box, floors, rockers, under rear seat pans, longs and engine bay. Basically all non-exterior surfaces. Not concourse but its protected, easy to apply and color matched.

The interior received a different treatment.

I did use Upol Gravitex for the undercoating strip on the exterior rockers. Basically where the trim would be. And I used gray Gravitex for the gas tank.

Yes. For me was a time and material saver.

2 steps instead of 4 or 5.
