Long Term Storage-Fuel

After draining the fuel tank, should I start the car & run the engine until it stalls to make sure no gasoline is left to gum up my injectors? TIA

Our winters are usually not long periods of no activity, so I never do a full "winter storage" preparation. I can easily get 100% gasoline, so I fill the tank and add the Stabil and drive it far enough to get things warmed up to operating temperatures.

I never go more than three months before driving it again.

Instead of running it dry and possible damaging the fuel pump, I would find some racing fuel, or even avgas if you can't find alcohol free gasoline. Just a few gallons and the Stabil and you will be fine. If you are going for long term storage, of more than a year, then for certain follow Grady's instructions in the thread posted above.

You did not define what your long term storage time frame was. 3 months is one thing, 3 years is way different for needed preparation.

Glen,

Totally agree. If storage is less than 3-4 months, other than some fuel stabilizer and adding some extra air to the tires, I would just throw a cover over the car and move on.

I read all that, I think I'll just sell my car.

Back to the original question. If you're storing the car for a season (like winter) I believe the SOP is to fill the tank with fresh gas with a fuel stabilizer. Then run the car a few minutes to pull the fresh gas/stabilizer mix thru the system. Be advised most fuel stabilizers are only good for about a year according to their labels. If you're storing the car for a few years, then draining the system might be the way to go.

As the OP, let me answer the time horizon- I'm looking at a year or two of not using the car.

1-2 years often becomes much longer. Check Grady's list. It will make you restart more successful.
