Just ran over some road debris

And now the clutch pedal doesn't return all the way up. I'm hoping it's just a cable adjustment but I'll have to baby it all the way home after work.

This is the second time I have run over something that caused damage. There's not much you can do when flanked by other cars at 60MPH and the car in front of you goes over something that easily clears. The first time was on my honeymoon in April when the bajo fitting on the fuel pump was knocked loose and this time the clutch cable (I hope). Does this happen to anyone else or am I just unlucky? Before anyone says, no I wasn't tailgating!

Jack the car and look under.

Probably something around the omega spring.

Depending on the year of your 911 it can be many things. The omega spring is vulnerable to road debris. No way to know until you check it out.

Roll pin was worn completely thru.

The best you can do is leave sufficient space between you and the car ahead of you so when there is something in the road you can see it and get out of the lane. I realize that can be tough with idiots who see space (barely) for 1 car in front of you and cut in, but if it were easy everyone would have a nice car. Good luck - I hope the issue is very minor.

Hmm. I hadn't thought of the Omega spring but looking at some other threads that might be it? I have a long drive home but I figure as long as I can get it in and out of gears cleanly I should be ok don't you think. Clutch pedal travel feels reduced as well.

Cairo, It does suck. I think I'm going to install one of these so it doesn't happen again.

I try to leave lots of space. On one recent trip the car in the other lane hit some debris, and hurled it right at my lane. No chance to dodge it. Ker thump. It was a large tire shred from a 18 wheeler but it went right under the car and I found a black mark on the crossmember and no damage. Pure luck.

Stopped by my favorite indy shop last night so we could throw it on the lift. This is what happened to the floor pan. Ouch! I think I can hammer it out from above and JB Weld it but damn, that was a hard hit. Looks like it contacted the clutch cable assembly and screwed up the adjustment. My hope is to bring the pedal feel back after a cable adjustment this weekend. Tech said he could see no evidence of damage to the cable or helper spring so I'll count myself lucky if an adjustment is all I need.

Oh my! I can only imagine how loud and violent that must have been. That’s a hard hit.

It's a terrible, sinking feeling! And it's the second time it's happened in 6 months. I hate to say it but I may have to cut back my driving on regular streets and highways. Unfortunately there aren't alot of canyons in SW Florida.

Yikes!!! What the heli was it? That is a serious rip in the pan to repair. I think that I would weld rather than JB as a long term repair.
I am amazed at the amount of debris on our highways, particularly shards of 18 wheeler tires. Not sure why so many tires blow but it appears that a lot do.
Been lucky in this department for the most part. Did have a 2 X 4 kicked up by a truck a distance ahead of me on an expressway years ago in my virtually new Scirocco. Luckily for me, it hit the A pillar on the driver's side and didn't come thru the windscreen and take me out. Thing must have gone 20 feet in the air, tumbling and I had nowhere to go to avoid it.
Good luck with the clutch.

Ivan, I wish I did but I really didn't have an opportunity. I'm guessing it was about 6" x 6" roughly square. Possibly a few 2 x 4 nailed together?

I barely had enough time to look in my rear view mirror and decide I would have gotten rear ended if I hit the brakes. I just held the wheel and BOOM! I'm going to try and leave more space between myself and the car in front but it won't matter. Someone will weave in there with no turn signal and I'll have to just keep dropping back. I'm going to have to be more selective about when and where I drive it.

Please repair that correctly by welding it and finishing it off nicely to protect the chassis from rust.

I think I've seen someone report worse damage than that on this forum in the past, but that looks pretty nasty. I'm sure it was quite a noise as well!

Ouch!
If cable adjustment fixes it it may be temporary. I would order a new one to have on hand so when cable pulls out of the swaged fitting you can replace it without waiting for shipping!

You should disassemble the clutch connection on that end, and inspect the cable closely.

Also remove the wood pedal cover and inspect the pedal assembly area carefully. That big of a whack might have cause the pedal box mounts to move a little. Check if the pedal assembly moves freely and in the proper alignment. You might need a body shop or an long time mechanic that is familiar with 80s 911s to check it out.

Hopefully it is just the transmission end that has the problem.

And I would ask a body shop to check on welding that hole up. Maybe file an insurance claim.
