I never regret selling my cars. I miss my first Porsche, but mostly for the memories. It was a rusty POS that had to go. The others? When it's time it's time. I recently went off the reservation and bought a modern sports car from another marque. It's cool and fun and I'm glad I did. Don't get stuck. Variety is the spice of life.

I’ve had 3 lotus, supercharged Elise, exige s, evora 400. Sold my evora to buy my sc. loved everything about my evora except it’s exotic looks. My sc doesn’t get nearly as much attention as the evora did, and I like it that way. That said, lotus is the only other manufacturer that I could consider owning as a forever car, like a 911
I’d you do get an evora, make sure you delete the third cat. Sounds glorious |

Same answer for me. I bought my first Porsche, a black 1972 914 1.7L, when I was in college and really could not afford the car. But I saw it and immediately knew I had to have it. I kept it and drove it for 4 years until I had to sell it for graduate school tuition. I have regretted selling it ever since. I currently have three air cooled 911's and my hope is that I never have to sell any of them. I have 3 adult sons and ideally each will inherit a car.
And I'm looking for a 1972 914 to buy...... |

Sold a 356 coupe and 911 targa back in the 90s for $20K for both . Had lots of stuff since, BMW 330, Jag F Type, Jag E Type. Porsche bug came back in a big way. Nothing else measured up. Had to pay big money to get back in the game with another 356 and 911. One thing is for sure…if you get out, you’ll be paying more to get back in the game.

Bought first air-cooled 911 in 1990 for $7k. Bought and sold them over the years with the most recent one just last month. While the price of admission has kept on increasing, the proceeds from sales have also gone up. So overall, air-cooled P car ownership/driving/racing has been a relatively inexpensive hobby. And I have been able to experience/appreciate various vintages…and other car marques.
Speaking of other marques, I got to drive a Evora LF1 a couple of weeks ago. Especially for the $ IMHO, its driving experience rivals other contemporary marques. Very underrated, I believe. So I say go for it. No regrets. |

My Precious is home again!
I purchased my 1975 911 Carrera in 1982. I loved this car from day one. I destroyed the first 2.7 motor and the second (both w/pulled studs). Finally in 1988 I had a 3.2 motor completely rebuilt by a former Andial guy who started a great shop in Prescott, Az "Air Cooleds Only". All new components from the crank up. He "bench-balanced" the motor and produced a very strong, sound driver. The car had several upgrades to suspension and exhaust. I named her "Precious" because I took parental care of her for many years. In 2016, when the air cooled market was strong I agreed to sell the car to a person I thought would take care of her. I almost instantly regretted selling and pined to get her back. It took 5 years till 2021 but I brought her home from Monterey this summer. It so good to have her back. This little G model (light weight) Carrera with a pumped up 1988 3.2 is like a member of the family again. This weekend she's been invited to show at Porsche Chandler's Classic Porsche Event. How proud and happy am I? VERY...
I wonder how many have sold and re-purchased their air cooled sweetie??? ![]()

Kyngfish, I too like(d) the Evora and have had similar thoughts. They are special cars as well.
One of the really great things about the 911 is you can always buy parts no matter what year, presumably forever. They are easy to work on for the most part: for my year 911, some parts are above my pay grade, so that is not good, and a genuine reason to seek alternative cars. Lotus may be not so kind on the aftermarket if you are looking for a car to enjoy for a while. The Alfa 4C is my pick if you wish to seek other pastures (because they will become iconic fairly soon).

Bought a 1982 930 when the prices were down. Long life of 930 admiration and then found one! Sold it when the prices rose to get into a 997 GT3. Wonderful car but had to be driven at crazy speeds to get a buzz. Missed everything about the 930. Then in 2018 a local 930 (1982) in my fav color, mocca black (brown) became available. I can't afford to have both so I let the GT car go. No regrets. While I spend more time under than in the 930 catching up on deferred maintenance, I love it. But, this is totally about personal taste. Many prefer the latest model they can get their hands on.

Drive your 911 to go test drive the Lotus. The answer should reveal itself somewhere on the way back. Or sooner.

I sold my 1997 993 Carrera C2S after sorting all the little issues and regretted it. I had repainted/repaired the front bumper valiance, the door check, installed PSS10s and it drove like a dream. I sold it to buy a Boss Mustang Laguna Seca (so stupid).
![]() Then I owned my '89 for 7 years, the longest I've ever owned a car, and enjoyed every second of it. Repaired items as-needed, made a few small upgrades (Bluetooth stereo, Monty muffler, better tires), and drove it everywhere. I sold it because I poured a small fortune into a hot rod '67 Elan which I convinced myself was more fun. In many ways, it was, but the horrid Lotus quality wore on me and there was always a pervasive sense the car was going to strand me or kill me and I realized the tactile experience was grossly undermined by the anxiety the car created. Finally, I picked up the '71 which in many ways is just right. It's so far from original that I can drive it guiltlessly and despite being 50 years old, it's reliable enough and I'm comfortable enough with these cars that I don't really worry about unexpected mechanical failures. After bouncing around to a bunch of other marquees, I've come to the conclusion that there is a very specific formula to the air-cooled 911s that other manufacturers simply never replicated. You can drive them distances. They've got an intimate, connected feel that only a few vehicles can replicate, and most are far more expensive or far less reliable (or both). They're well built. They're reliable. Parts are readily available. They are also still very, very fun. Their values are more consistent than most of their competitors.

Sold my '74 2.0 914 a couple years ago on BaT. Sold for way more than I thought it would and haven't regretted it. Yes it was "just" a 914 but it was a sweet little car. However, if I even think about selling the 911 I instantly regret it

After selling a Slate Gray 356 Super coupe years ago, I'm a lot more careful about doing a 'quick sale' of a Porsche automobile.
That one left a mark. I had owned a number of 356s at the time and I thought I would simply just get another one. The market went WAY up quickly, and kids, a house payment, work, and bills left me without a Porsche for many years. Make wise decisions, and don't make any rash car moves without some reflection and thought.

Hah, last I heard the car was headed to the Seattle area. It was a great running car, no question. I believe there are at least 3 people who miss owning that beauty.

I sold a pristine aircooled 911 which I bought directly from the first owner who had enjoyed it for 33 years. I have no regrets at all.
It helps a lot to have other Porsches in the garage that are more suited to what I like.
