I volunteered to be part of the beta project for the new H4 LED bulb replacement put on by Audette. I selected the Philips LED bulbs.

The first thing I noticed is that these things are really heavy. There's a substantial heatsink on the back of the bulb - although I hesitate to call it a bulb since it's basically a shaped circuit board - and a control box.

It sticks out the back of the reflector, but not so far that there isn't room within the headlight bucket to fit both it and the control box.

Yup, works!

I also took this opportunity to replace the rusty reflector and off-brand glass on the driver's side. What's the difference? Well, see for yourself.

One has the Bosch logo, the other does not.

Also, the speckled pattern at the top of the glass is much more uniform on the Bosch one, and the ribs in the glass are more defined.

Here's the totally unscientific results from the swap. Top is regular halogen H4s, the bottom is the LED. The level of brightness is just a little bit higher on the LEDs.

In this one the bottom is the halogen and top LED. You can see there's a sharp brightness at the cutoff and overall light levels are better, but the difference isn't as spectacular as I was expecting. The true test will be taking the car for a ride out in the middle of nowhere to see how the LEDs perform. I wasn't terribly impressed with the halogens on my recent road trip, here's hoping the LED perform better.

oh man, keep us posted. i've got a few brands for HID retrofits on my buildsheet. They're all beautiful lights, but I do love the look of the stock setup and with an upgrade up front it's got to be better than the candle these cars come with.

The before and after look impressive in the images, but I'm sure what you're seeing in real life is more telling than what a camera can pick up.

Keep us posted.!

The real test will be on some dark back roads which I should get to this weekend. But yes, looking at the images the light spread does seem more impressive - I guess I was expecting a more night and day difference. The halogens were already so much better than the sealed beams.

Finally got my old WUR back from Tony, freshly rebuilt. Can you tell which is which? Put it in and now it starts instantly on the first turn of the key when cold. Now I just need to fix the too-high 2000 RPM fast idle by figuring out how to adjust the AAV.

I also decided to try installing the CDI+ I bought used instead of the Permatune seen below.

Unfortunately, the car ran like total dog**** after I installed it. I started with a flat config since I didn't want to introduce any variables into the mix, so I left the distributor untouched. I guess I'll have to re-visit this one later. I put the Permatune back in and it went back to running amazing.

Read through the thread so far last night and enjoyed it all! Enjoying your attention to detail and wanting to keep things as original as possible, at least in regards to one's ability to reverse some of your upgrades if desired. #BubbaFreeCar

What coil are you using? Maybe this is an issue with the Classic CD+?

Also, I've had issues when the plug under the CD unit was not seated tightly.

Right now I'm down to small projects that won't take the car off the road during prime driving season. So it's been stuff like re-initializing the O2 sensor.

Also I've noticed that the engine struggles a bit to hit redline lately, so based on the suggestions I checked a few things, like the air filter. Looks fine to me.

Also I knocked the last bit of that stop on the throttle but I didn't think there was an issue there.

But I suspect it's the valves - either a broken spring or simply needing them adjusted. I'm off next week but that's the job to tackle when I get back.

Meanwhile, driving around. Who needs a $100 cup holder?

I went out to a local Porsche meet and Zoidberg was a big hit. It really stood out in the crowd as the only white G-body but also the interior. Tons of people said they thought it was the best car there. High praise!

Thanks! It's coming along.

And to continue my efforts to be as much of a cliche as possible by getting all the same stuff as everyone else, my coco mats came in yesterday.

So all this time I thought my fog lights were broken, because I could never get them to turn on. Turns out they work fine, you just have to have the headlights on too. This is the sort of thing that happens when you don't get an owner's manual with the car.

Have to add the wonky right light to the project list.

As usual, I totally forgot the adage "The enemy of good is better" and decided I wanted to try moving the rearview mirror down so the sun visors wouldn't hit it - whoever installed it originally put it too high (to increase visibility I assume) so every time you flipped them down they'd bang the mirror.

The glass place I took it to swore up and down it wouldn't be an issue. Surprise! It was an issue. So now I needed a new windshield.

I asked them for an appointment the following week to allow me time to order a new Uro gasket since they did the re-design and it should have a bit more "bite" and do better in the corners. I dropped it off and they swore up and down it wouldn't be an issue and they had years of experience. Surprise! They broke the replacement! Had to wait another day to get the car back.

I guess third time's the charm and they managed to get it done. The installer told me they'll charge the next guy double because it was way more work than they expected.

In the end it turned out to be a good thing as the old gasket was totally torn at the bottom and likely letting water into the interior. So I guess in the end it worked out.

The new gasket is much wider for sure.

It's nice and even all the way around the glass as well, whereas the original tended to pull in at the corners.

And now, the visors can fold down as nature intended.

I have a giant cabinet full of stuff to sell that's just taking up space. I'd be down for another swap in October!

Post #87 —- you mention that you “got it done” with the fuse/area that had 2 wires going into the connection. …. How?? Not to add fire, (quite literally) but I have 2 spots where someone put 3 in the fuse “input” area, and I am trying to figure out why, and how to put these terminal blades into the fuse wire opening. ..Always something, eh? Love the Coco mats, they look really nice!

I was quite surprised to read that as I have been very satisfied with my CD+ installation. I made no adjustments whatsoever Just installed it as I received it.
