Yet another door stay question

Hi all, I’ve been having this “click” noise when I open my driver door (near 50-60 degrees) so I assumed a bad door stay and wanted to install the reinforcement kit while in there. I took apart the door card and I’m having trouble getting the outer reinforcement plate to fit because there seems to be pinched metal on the sides of the hole. The metal on the inner part of the door seems okay. I’ve attached pictures of the inner and outer door with and without the door stay. Any suggestions to get the outer plate in place?

I did a trial installation of the new door stay but I’m still getting the clicking noise at positions even closer to the body of the car now.

It maybe the pin on the door holding the stay. I have that problem with mine hold the pin while opening the door to check .

Are you using a roll pin in the striker?

The click come from the pin, or a worn hole in the arm. You can set up a cellphone camera on highspeed (slo-mo) and film it move when the click sound is made as you move the door.

Looks like you have two issues:

The click is almost certainly caused by a bad door stay pin. See this image, the pin on the right is the worn out pin that was causing the clicks in my 84 Targa. The pin on the left is a new pin.

It looks like the exterior skin of your door jam is pressed in which is preventing you from installing the reinforcement plate.

You'll have to find some way to pry that metal up so that you can fit the reinforcement plate.

Here is the reinforcement plate installed on my car. It took awhile for me to figure out how to get the plate in, because it is much larger than the hole... you need to slide it in at an angle. Let us know if you need help getting it in there after you get the metal pried up so that it will fit.

In addition to installing a new door check strap, a new check strap pin and the rennline door stay reinforcement kit, I installed door check strap pin retaining clips to make sure the pins do not work themselves out:

6mm bolt and nylock nut. Tighten until the pop is gone.

Thanks, I’m trying to pry up that metal but I’m having a really hard time. I don’t want to push down too hard and stress the metal below it - making matters much worse. Any tips?

Will do, I’m just trying to get that metal pried up to install the reinforcement plate
