According to the latest Red Book, the chassis is a Karmann, the engine would be type 911/08 US Sporto

Yes, the engine # is a very good match to the VIN. The transmission # is missing a digit (should be 7), and I think would be 7000421. I do not have much data linking VIN's to transmission #'s and the 4 speed (type 911/00 serial 7000001 to 7000691) data is almost non-existent, however, the serial is not inconsistent with the VIN.
BTW, if the Redbook says that a Karmann chassis can only have a 911/08 engine, then the book is less than useless. They only made 227 911/08 engines and there were 4116 Karmann 911T.

'71 T Back To Life
The numbers for our '71T Coupe:
VIN: 9111100732 Engine: 6115580 Type: 911/07 Transaxle: 7114096 Ratios: 911/01 = A-GA-0-V-ZA Date Code: 901.301.101.OR This one has me stumped to find out how to decipher. Can someone help me with identifying an engine please? I have a 72 Targa which came into the UK from South Africa. I was aware that it wasn't matching numbers when I bought it. Its running on Zeniths and pulls very well. I pulled the motor out to have the gearbox rebuilt so decided to put a clutch in it and fix the normal oil leaks. Anyway it is running alloy heads dated 1/70 - iron cylinders (no idea of age). I was told it was a 2.7 and is registered in the UK as a 2.7. There is no type number in the usual place. There are 2 engine numbers (both the same) - one on the fan tower and one at the rear next to the breather (was concerned that it was a 914 motor when I saw this) - number is 6025445. Understand the 6 is for number of cylinders ( check lol) and the 2 is for 1972. The type number 0 is confusing - any ideas?

Is there a * (star) stamped before and after the engine number?

Well, the car serial number (10 digits) could tell you if it was for the US market or not.

Could you guys offer me any help on what the 6451413* engine number means? It is in a 1975S which I think is the right model year for this number.
