I wonder what shift knob shape women pcar drivers prefer? (purely rhetorical). Pictures not required or desired.

Thanks for the input guys (and bday wishes Blkbird!)
Like the horizontal vs vertical hand position preference tip - never thought of it really. One question for those of you with short shifts - some of you have shortened it even further by cutting an inch or so off. Doesn't this make shifting a PITA? I find it a bit of a stretch is needed to go into fifth already (i.e. back comes off the seat) - I can't imagine shortening the stick further or my butt would have to come off the seat for 5th gear.... For reference I am 5'9".

I'm 5'11" and wouldn't shorten it. As a matter of fact, I'm running my Momo knob up about 1/4 of an inch. I.e. it isn't sitting all the way down.
Hey, that reminds me of another good tip. I cut off the little "shelf" that's welded to the stick the last time I had my shifter assembly out. Much better. Why you ask? Well, let me tell ya. The Momo knobs taper down to basically nothing, were as the stock knobs are thick at the bottom. It was kind of strange because the Momon tapers down then there's this shelf thing that the stock knob sits on. I could feel it with my finger tips when I shifted. Bugged me and didn't look good. I took out the whole assembly, (very easy) and used my dremel to cut off the 3 welds that hold the shelf on. Just be careful not to cut into the bar itself because it will be visible. Then, I ground down the rest of the welds to be perfectly smooth, like the rest of the bar. Then, I re-sprayed the first few inches and put the knob back on and the assembly back in. Very clean looking! I wish I had pics, but no digital camera yet.

Well, here's a really lousy picture, but you get the idea.
I run the MOMO Race-air leather, which has a larger ball than the factory shifter (good for my larger hand). I turned a titanium shift shaft extension on the lathe, which boosts the shift ball up about 3/4". Not much, but I like it. I also installed the factory short shift kit, which helps offset the increase in length from my shift extension. My shift knob banged into my seat before I made the extension, and now my hand drops a shorter distance from the wheel to the knob. I lucked out and found some perforated vinyl that matches the perforated pattern on the shift knob. My mother in law stitched up the new bag, which fits great. All I need now are new synchros and I'm all set...

I am 6'2" with longish arms so the cut down shifter works for me. My reason for doing it was I also did not like the shelf that Chili mentions but was too lazy to cut it off. In retropect, I would try that method first and see if I like it.

I have the super anatomico with the FSS kit on a 915 gearbox and think it's a great combo.

Hey Terry,
Nope, I just took it off and bead blasted it. When it gets scraped and dingy, I'll bead blast it again. -BG

OK guys, Momo's are great but I think I found the ideal knob for the SC.
Don't let the pic size fool you - about the size of a 5-pin bowling ball. ![]()

I have this knob in my SC and absolutely love it.
I had to buy it after installing a short shift kit and not being able to pry out the original knob However I like the feel better than the original one. |

I would like to get something like the "Competizone" as described by Adam Chaplin....but in wood.
- does Momo sell the bottom ring piece only for us who can work with wood and make our own, or... - is there a wooden model that can be turned on a lathe to get the desired reverse-taper of this model? Then you can laser-burn a shift pattern on top, like OEM ! ---Wil Ferch
