Cool cheap sport mufflers

Is anyone interested in modifying the stock bananna type, two inlet muffler to make it into a sport one?

I have found the original article in Up-Fixen and have the diagrams.

Thanks

David Duffield

I have one like that. Sounds awsome. Got it from Tyson who got it from ?Lars? More work than I would do for what you can get them for. Great investment.

I have a muffler just sitting in my garage. My girlfiend of course wants me to chuck it. I would love to try this, but how the hell do you cut the hole's 'inside' the muffler? I would also like to move the pipes closer to one another. Is this possible as well? Looks like it
Thanks and merry xmas.

You cut the hole for the new tail pipes first and then torch the openings in the interior thru the left one, according to the text. I don't see how you get the big disks you cut out of the inner partitions back out thru the little exhaust pipe hole without cutting them into pieces, though. You don't want to leave them rattling around inside the muffler, that's for sure.

You can also open up the outside shell of the muffler from the top to gain access and then weld it back up. That's what I did with mine, since I retained the single outlet and didn't add the dual pipes. I completely cut out the piece which is shown in the top drawing as the "slotted pipe section" also.

Cool

Tom has put the whole article on his post.

Please note that this will also work for the '74 model. The rear valance on the >'73 covers the muffler. You will have to modify your valance for this or make the pipes a bottom exit.

There has been some discussion of opening the opposite end of the muffler to cosmetically look like the Dansk sport unit. I however have not seen what internal modifications need to be made.

I would seem that this muffler might reduce backpressure in that Roger W Chaney, (RWC comments) reference a leaning of the motor.

Tom is correct about cutting the chunks into pieces to remove them from the exhaust holes. It's pretty easy.

I thought with the discussions I have seen here that may be of interest to this group.

Merry Christmas

You thought right.

My old mechanic used to cut the welds on stock mufflers and modify the innards, whiel leaving it a single out. They sounded great, whether they did anything for performance, who knows.

I see said the blind man. Well I can weld, cut, but not that good. I would probably have to have someone else do it. Thanks for the info..
