new job another Porsche???

SO it looks like im getting a new job and graduating so im thinking of adding a 911 to the stable. What can i expect to get for around $8k? I am almost positve that i dont want/cant afford a turbo, but what model/year 911 would make a good starting car? Thanks for any info, Scott

A car that you must be willing to work on yourself. IF you set a low budget, like 8k, chances are that the car will have some issues that will need to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

Good luck. We'll help you out with your search. Just post away, but try using the search function too.

I dont mind working on the car, i just finished with a tranny rebuild and am about to swap it in my 944. I was looking more for model and year information. I know the Evolution of the 924/944/968 but im lost when it comes to the 911s evolution except that i fell in love with the carrera RSR (993 i think?)

stretch/wait to buy a good SC ... $11-14k. They can be had for less, but usually you get what you pay for in issues that need to be dealt with.

I got mine for $7,700...needed a clutch, but put 10k miles on it before it had to be replaced. The other issues are cosmetic. Good luck!

On a 993 $8k will get you some pretty tasty mods. To make it an RSR, $8k will almost get you through half of the engine work.

Two of my favorite things Porsches and Hockey!! It looks like ill be looking at the late 70s and early 80s for one. I might concentrate on 1980 (my birth year). That car looks great though!!!

I drove an 80s 911 about a year ago, it was an SC(whats the differance between and SC and Standard?) with a full eruo convertion (what does that mean?). The guy worked with my dad, first and only car i have taken to 125mph, my dads going to see if its still for sale but two years ago he wanted around $17k.
THanks for your guys help, I feel like an idiot but this time i want to learn about the porsche im going to buy BEFORE I buy one, not after when I need to work on it. Live and Learn.

I will try to answer a few of your questions. The 911 SC is the "standard" 911 of the times. If he says it has a full euro conversion he probably means the ride height was lowered, and he changed out the lights and a few other things. If he still wants $17,000 for it, it's too high. Nice SC's are going anywhere from $11-14 K. Hope this helps a little.

Scott,

I would rather see you find a nice SC and spend what it takes to get a good car than spend $8 on whatever you can find and end up buying a rat-trap or car with rust. Good cars for this amount are the exception, and not the norm with most 911's.

A lot of credit unions will loan money on older cars and if you put over 50% down they will work with you. Financing $5k when you put $7k down will give you a workable monthly payment and one that you could actually pay off early as the funds and job stabilize.

Buy a good car for a descent price. IMHO an $8k limit is keeping you in the range where you will buy more problems than needed and might sour you on the car. $12-$14k will buy you a good solid car and one that you drive and not work on !

Been there and done that... please learn from our mistakes!

Bought a 84 cab with 98K for 13K... good deals are out there, you just need to dedicate yourself to a few month's madness.

Also, my first 911 was $8500, a 71E that was a total piece of crap. IMO, like the others said, spend 10K and stretch to a nice SC, otherwise you'll quickly make up the difference in potential repairs that are likely to come with cars of that cost and age.

Good luck,

-DMA

Scott,

Also forgot to mention that a good paper history means a lot with a 911. Unless you know the car and owner and feel comfortable with the fact that they have taken care of the car, I would want a descent history on the car.

911's tend to be driven hard and fast and will put up with it if taken care of well. If not or if they have been owned in an area where someone who is not experienced with working on them then they can get in bad condition and fast.

Doing your homework here first is a major step in the right direction!
