Further lightening ideas - heat stuff

So I'm looking over the car tonight, looking for stuff to throw overboard. One item that came to mind was the heat and ventilation controls. For the heater, I would redirect the paper tube that comes out of the heater channel 90 degrees, straight to the footwell area, and cover it with a small grill to keep crap out of it. I would then lose the blower and stuff behind the dash. This would give me rudimentary heat (ala early VW bug), and save some weight. Remember, this beast is now a drive-it-there track car.

Thoughts?

In other news, a set of 935 doors are on their way from Peter @ RennSpeed. I'm hunting down coupe window frames, and will fab my own 935-style windows, as well as rear quarter windows and the back window. I figure the worst I can do is waste some Lexan, and if I botch it, I can suck it up and get a set from $pektre.

Not much wt. is it?

DO you need heat at all?? You could get rid of the exchangers, the heat dump boxes and a lot more wt. You could put a gas heater in the trunk for the winters only.

You could also toss the speedo cable and use a elec. one with just a wire. That'll save an ounce or two.

My car also has an electric speedo; If I was really hardcore, I would ditch the speedo altogehter, and carry a hand-held GPS unit for freeway trips.

I'm guessing the HVAC stuff is 10lbs or so. I had to remove it once to replace to wiper assembly.

Heat is nice, and since I already have heater boxes, I'll keep it for now. The weight savings by going with heatless headers would be minimal, but it would cost me $$$$

I like it, VW heat. From what I remember when my parents had a '73 super beetle convertible the heat worked pretty darn well.

Did you get the sway bar fixed?

I finished the sway bar tonight, but decided to not go to the event @ Sears, as I haven't had a chance to really test the fix.

My parents still have the '73 bug they bought new.

I've been working out 3 times a week, cutting down on the carbs, but nothing seems to work...

But seriously, it's in the car while I'm on the street, but gets taken for the track.

That's a good excuse. I have a spare but no tool kit or air compressor so it is basically worthless as is my jack.

Thom,

I took out the fresh air blower on mine so I still have the defroster. It looks like there's alot of stuff that could come out from under the dash. Do you have a weight estimate of the stuff under the dash? I realize I'd lose my defroster.

Looks great, I also pull all the heater control and fans out. I am leaning towards doing it to the wipers.

Are there any rule that say you have to have wipers at any events?

Sweet! Yes, what's the weight of all of that stuff? I can't wait to be able to do this myself. My last 911 was a daily driver, I just couldn't bring myself to do this. The next will not be. I want a lean, mean trackin machine.

Fortunately the bug is still in the family. My parents sold it to my uncle who fixed a few odds and ends and gave it to his daughter.

So there is a rule on keeping the wipers? My car will be a weekend to the track car. Also there is no inspection in AL.

I was wondering if there is racing rule make you keep wipers?

I am in the middle of putting it back together and i don't what to put them on.

Rules, what rules? This car is for DE's; the only rule is to keep the shiny side up and don't hit anything

I'm keeping the wipers - occasionally I'll run an event in the rain. I just remembered seeing an article in Excellence or some such about someone who treated their windshield with something so they didn't have to run wipers. Can't remember who or what.

Rain-X is great stuff. I have no idea if that's what was recommended, but I've used it before and it is amazing stuff...water just sheets off.

Second on the Rain-X. I keep it on the family wagon, never use the wipers.
I've had the 911 for about 7 years now, the only time the wipers have been used is when the swich gets bumped during an auto-x (I know you all have done this). I say toss them.

Keep the heat. Dump the radio. I'm about to reinstall mine pretty soon. I think!
