999 201 321 00 is the needle bearing for the original clutch fork design. The updated setup moved the needle bearings to the trans. bell housing and plastic bushings were substituted into the clutch fork.

I assume the bulletin was released sometime after April 6, 1989? Since the later cars (964 and 993) use the same setup, I have to think the bulletin shortly followed the factory installation of these updated parts. Surprising that the original needle bearings were still available in 2002. I would have thought Porsche would stop supplying them.

Thanks for confirming my concern Kevin.

What do you guys think of this situation? I have a shop that charged the P.O. (my mother) for the original needle bearing as part of a $4600.00 valve & ring job, performed in 2002. My guess, is they didn't even change the bearing as I am experiencing problems only 3500 miles later, and it doesn't seem likely that they would choose to order the outdated part. What should I do?

Take it apart and see what you are dealing with. That is best at this point.

I would take it back and try - I dont think you'll get any restitution.

This is just another reason on why you should 1) have a good relationship with your mechanic = or 2) do the work yourself.

You guys don't think that if I showed up w/ the tech bulletin and the invoice, that I would get anywhere? It is clear that he put the wrong part in (if he actually did, and wasn't just stealing money from my mom by adding items to the bill). In my eyes this borders on fraud.

I would love to do the work myself, but unfortunately I don't have a garage, so I doubt I would be able to do this on the street (where all my wrenching takes place now).

Strange as it seems, you can order the "original" parts from Porsche and they have them ready to deliver. Ask me how I know...

If the mechanic was not a dealer, and they didn't charge a significant amount of labor for the arbor based update, I don't know that you have a recourse with them that doesn't include $ out of your pocket.

As for doing the job outside, I think the weather in San Jose would lend itself to this!

Good luck,

Chris

How long do you guys think it would take a first timer to drop the engine and perform the update (the weltmeister no drilling type).

Guys,

I have my engine and tranny out to fix the valve guides in my 87 and this thread got me just a little bit nervous so I pulled the cross shaft to inspect the Weltmeister design that I installed a couple of years ago.

You all will be glad to know that the shaft looked fine. I also wiggled it to check for bushing wear and it passed that hi tech test.

I was able to pull it by hand and daubed it carefully with neverseez before reinstalling it

well, it took me the first time - with a helper 4 hours - and we basically did it twice on a 1987 911.

Wow, that seems fast to remove the engine, seperate the tranny, perform the update, and reinstall everything. Were you using a lift? Are you making any trips to the Bay Area anytime soon

Sorry - 4 hours just to remove the engine - an hour to gawk at it once it was out...

You could do the whole thing in a weekend, if you don't have to keep the wife/girlfriend happy...

Ok, Keith is scaring me. How many hours labor will a shop charge for the update?

Sorry about that Brandon, but my attempt at humor was in reference to 'taking six months with keeping the g/f happy', not intending to imply anything about the dificulty of the cross shaft update. Don't let me scare ya....

G50 update or just worn shifter bushings?

Do you think this could be my car's problem?

"I have an '87 G50. Right now, I cannot shift it into any gear, but 3rd. This is with the car off and when it is turned on. I press in the clutch, then try to put it into reverse. It won't go, but with the clutch fully depressed and with me applying pressure towards putting it into reverse, it will not go, but the car moves ever so slightly to the rear. I try to press it into 1st and cannot, but when I hold in the clutch, and press the shift lever towards 1st, I see the car start to creep forward. It worked great the whole previous week.

This happened once before and after sitting for a week, I went out to try and get it to the shop and it worked perfectly. Mechanic kept it for 2 weeks just looking at it messing with it and trying it everyday, but it never messed up again until now.

No leaks from slave or master cylinders.

Any ideas?"

Oh, the symptoms are a stiff clutch pedal and the resulting gear crunching or difficulty engaging gears. Don't ignore it. Wrecking G50 synchros means entire gear replacement (advantage: 915) and that equals BIG $$$$.

The Weltmeister kit is not break the bank expensive. $161 for the shaft setup and another $111 for the new release fork.

A little searching in the Pelican parts catalog will get you what you need..................
