Porsches and Women : They don't get it!
After a "light" talk with my wife yesterday about the whole Porsche ownership I came to the conclusion that it is a waste of time to justify the car expenses and costs over certain period of time . Basically I think that I need to create a special account for this in order not to share / show those expenses. It will never by justify for them, when I talk to my wife about any money or time I put there it will be an open discussion : "Instead of spending money in your car , first we need to expend this for the house , the dining room , the maid" , whatever you name it . For the money you are puttiing in that thing you can have a newer / nicer / safer ride yourself. It is funny because I am not using that money to have a lover or getting myself drunk so the car is my therapy , my proud and joy and also my hobby where I can concentrate in other thing besides : Work , Family , friends, problems or whatever is your "own" personal space that you need is your therapy and they just do not get it!. Is that so hard to understand ?. Or maybe I am a "macho" or selfish ?. I do not think so.

I'm lucky, my wife is pretty cool about the whole car thing. She was happy I got the Porsche because she knew it made me happy. But she really didn't understand fully until she drove it. Now she is almost as excited as I am when we upgrade the cars. So, maybe you should let her drive it (Flame retardant suit on) or at least take her for a spirited drive so she understands what the car is all about.

Jose,
Most women have different priorities than men. My wife does not understand my interest in motor vehicles, but she accepts it and does not give me too hard a time about it. We have, though, had the "I want to spend the money on the house instead of the car" discussion, and we usually find a way to compromise. Good Luck

You need to develop a heavy drinking problem so your wife will leave you alone about the car expenditures

Hey, it's just "Different strokes...". People have different priorities. Some guys don't get the Pcar thing either.
It's like Sebastian said, "It's like trying to tell a stranger about rock 'n' roll . Do you believe in magic?" Note: I'ts easy for me to say this because my sig other gets it.

I have the same problem you have. If my wife knew exactly how much money I've put in my 911 she would kill me. Her new thing is rather than dumping more money into a 1984 911 we should purchace a new Boxter because she dosen't like driving the 911.

Actually, a LOT of people just don't "get" the Porsche thing...and all in all I am glad of it.
I don't necessarily want what everyone else wants. It's sorta like (and I am probably in the minority on this) owning a "new, optioned-just-the-way-you-want-it, still-under-warranty, ultra-reliable" whatever or even Porsche. I don't want that. Why? Because ANYONE can have that. All you have to do is be willing to sign up for the payments (admittedly huge ones if its a new Porsche). In a nutshell? I love "old and perfect" cars. Sure, someone COULD go buy an old and perfect car, but most do not, most buy "new and perfect". WOmen and a LOT of regualr guys just don't "get" why you'd put all this money, all this effort into an admittedly nice-and-extra-special-in-its-time Porsche. They'd rather have an Infiniti G35. Nice car, I'll leave it to others to have those, I'll stick with my affliction...er....uh....hobby. EDIT: P.S. to Jose Luis - I was married 20 years before my ex decided she wanted out. We had one pool of money, it was a source for disagreement some times. I am now in a committed relationship of 6 years, we have a joint account with a fixed biweekly deposit for ALL joint expenses, the house, utilities, etc. ALL OTHER MONEY is to do with as we individually see fit. I know this wouldn't "go" with a lot of women, but I wish I had done this in my marriage -wouldn't have saved it/wasn't the issue, but it woulda been a LOT easier. Good luck.

I let my GF drive my car. I aske her what she thought after a drive. Her response: "I like the ride. I'd prefer an automatic"....;My response: "Blank stare....."
I guess I should find one with "Tiptronic" for me, I prefer a clutch pedal..

A few months after I got my 911 my wife started in with this stuff too. Everytime she wanted some extra cash she'd start picking on my car - "if you didn't spend 20k on that thing we could buy xyz...blah blah..."
I finally got fed up and reminded her that I have done everything for her and the kids...supported them financially (sole breadwinner) and emotionally, and that I rarely spent anything on myself. I said something like that after all these years of sacrifices for the fam that I deserve my one toy and I don't want her stomping on my dream car anymore. So for the past year she has not said one more thing about it...and yes, we are still on good terms with each other.

I don't think my GF really gets it, but the one time she drove my car, in a small parking lot, she did have a grin from ear to ear. So there is hope!

My ex-wife wanted to spend money on everything SHE wanted to spend money on.So I bought my '74 911 just after the divorce was finalised.I now have two old Porsches and a new wife who after her first ride in one (before marriage) said "Wow that's cool as *****,but don't let me drive it 'cos I'll wreck the clutch".How can you beat spousal approval and a warning like that !!

My wife gets more annoyed about spending money on the bikes because she does not really enjoy riding. She has said many many times she’d like to see all the bikes sold and spend the money on anything Porsche. I once showed her the prices of used Boxster S models and she looked at me and called me a girl for looking at the Boxster. (No offense boxster people) She said she’d never drive it, which for me may be a plus.

Lurking for years, registered for months - why not jump in now? Every now and then I suggest that I sell to raise some cash for other desires we have. Wife won't even consider it. Firmly opposed. I guess it brings back memories of when we were dating.

If you evaluate a Porsche as a car, it proably looks a littel worse than most cars as an expense.
If you look at it as a hobby with a large initial investment and recurring expenses it looks no worse than fishing( boats), golf ( equipment, memeberships etc) or others. Looking at all my Porsche expenses over the last 4 years of ownership less the residual value of my car - I've had a hell of a lot of fun for the money. When I'm ready to substitute a tee time for seat time, it will be time to go. Last edited by gerry100; 08-26-2005 at 11:42 AM.. |
