G50 Transmission
Contemplating the purchase of an 1988 3.2 Carrera with a G50 transmission. How are is the shift quality and feel of the G50. No major engine mods planned and intended use would be DE and autocross events. I see a lot of aftermarket products designed to improve the "feel" of 901 and 915 transmissions, but not much on G50's. Do they need "improvement" like the earlier units.

The G50 is a solid transmission. Very desireable.
Only improvements are good shift bushings. Wevo has made a new G50 shifter, but it's by no means an essential. Tell us more about your intended purchase! Don

Hmm... mine doesn't rattle. It used to, before I replaced the clutch plate and cross-shaft.

Yeah, I haven't had the motor out of mine yet. I searched through the receipts from the PO looking for the cross shaft update but didn't find it... Clutch was just done about 8K ago tho. Clutch feels OK, for the moment, so I guess it'll have to wait. Apparently it is a well known problem however. Porsche even came out with a bracket that connects the tranny to one of the heat exchangers to dampen it. I think our host has it for about $17.

From my experience, the rattle is due to the strength of the gears and the layout. I used to work at a Chevy dealer and ALL the Corvette owners would complain about gear rattle. We put a car up in the air and you would swear that there are mini sledge hammers in the box. The engineers said it was entirely normal. It sounds exactly like my G50.

The G50 is great -- much better than previous iterations.

Contrary to Jeremy's answer...IMHO....there ARE issues with G50 built before April '89..when the factory ( finally ! ) fixed the fork shaft bearing issue...
G50's built from the start ( 87) through early 89 better show receipts for this fix...either from the dealer or aftermarket. The factory fix and parts and fixtures are NLA today, IIRC..... Symptoms include a heavy pedal that gets worse as the bearing supports go south.... Every G50 will sooner or later have this issue unless fixed. -Wil ( quite naturally a 915 guy)....
