Ball joint installation

Will be installing new ball joints this weekend- do you tighten the ball joint nut to the ball joint using any anti-seize on the threads? Also, Some say ant-seize on the wedge pin, what about grease on the wedge pin, any thoughts? Thanks, Jerry

I'm not sure about your particular inquiry, but it's always helpful if you tell us what car you're working on (what year).

Use the anti seize on the pin. You can use it on the threads if you would like as well.

Cheers

Jerry, I have just completed the same job on my car 77 carrera 3 and according to the factory porsche spec book I have it says to apply grease to the threads on the nut ( ball joint to control arm that is and torque to 250Nm)this is the only nut to grease according to this book. I also applied grease to all surfaces on the wedge pin except for its thread

Steve, thanks for the info. I would think that if you greased this nut it would probably be only a light coat. Does grease affect the torque setting and would it tend to loosen the nut eventually? Not sure, Thanks jerry

G`day Jerry, I only lightly greased the large nut you shouldn`t have any worries with it coming loose if you torque it up correctly (torqued up fine with the grease) and refit the wave washer and cotter pin.

hope all goes well. Steve

The pickle fork did not work for me- after friving the pin out, after much wasted time with a pickle fork, & small 2 ' pry bar I finally got it separated by pushing in on the strut and using a large 5 foot steel bar wedged under the belly of the car and over the a-arm then pushed down on the large pry bar, popped right out. The key I think is pushing in on the rotor/strut creating a better angle for the pin to come out and the use of alot of leverage. Argeo- I don't have my manual with me now but if memory serves me correctly I think it was 33 or 36 lb- the nut attaching the tie rod to the spindle arm. The large ball joint nut is 184 lb. Jerry
