Given the mechanical function of the coupler, I don't think you can go wrong with Wevo or Stomski. They both do what they are intended: take the play out of shifting. Even better bushings will accomplish the same thing. I have had both Stomski and upgraded bushings in the coupler. For street purposes, they work/feel the same and result in better shifter feel and engagement. I suspect the Wevo product is equally up to task. For DE/racing purposes, I have no clue if there is a noticeable difference.

If you've got some welding and fabrication skills, sure you can make your own Wevo or Stomski coupler. But Hayden and Steven do the work for those who can't (or don't want to) and provide the steel ring sized to the transmission shift rod diameter, with tapped hole for cone-style set screw on one end, and on the other end is the splined shaft that fits into the shifter tube.
Those who can make their own? Grab a helicopter joint from Pegasus. Good people with most everything in stock. https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productselection.asp?Product=1490

I have brass bushings never installed if someone wants to buy them, PM me.
The WEVO shifter is awesome, much better than stock and no real noise increase for me (minor if anything)

I have recently installed new dogs, cogs, synchro's and a none too cheap 'while-you-are-there' package.
Wevo: - Billet clamp - Coupler - Short-shift kit - Shift gate I am very happy. Initial install felt like a 'Regimental Sergeant Major.' Clear, precise but a little stiff. Nearly 2K km later the stiffness has gone. Shifting is smooth and unambiguous—which is what I was looking for. PS. I hear no additional noise because of the WEVO kit apart from the occassional 'click' as a gate closes when going into 5th. Last edited by The Welshman; 03-29-2016 at 11:30 AM.. Did you guys ever to stop think why Porsche made the 911 coupler with some fore/aft play in it?
It's actually a pretty good reason......

To allow the shift forks in the transmission to "float" in the groove of the selector ring while the transmission is in gear? The selector ring spins against the fork when a gear is engaged.

This isn't something I need to worry about in my race car since the transaxle and engine mounts are all solid and the cage stiffens up the car between the shifter and the transaxle.

By the way, is Ed still around? I would like to buy one of his coupler bushing kits.

Ed's whisper shift coupler is awesome for less than $100. Made all the difference and I have driven early 911s with both couplers mentioned above. But the question is which one, well between the two, I'd buy the Stomski coupler. Well made and better materials used in the process. Added benefit, he is always at Hershey and you can ask him directly on his products. He is a high caring and extremely smart man that knows what the .... he is producing for the Porsche community.

A friend of mine asked me to look at the shifting in his car. Drove it and it was hilariously difficult to find a gear. I pulled the cover off the tunnel and there was absolutely no shifter bushings at all. None. Zero. Nada. He ordered a set of the Delrin bushings from Pelican. They weren't quite as high quality as the ones Ed made but it was a very reasonable substitute. These also do not have the elongated opening that the original bushings had. A really nice complement is the JWest conical set screw with a jam nut and the replacement coupler clamp. The clamp only requires one 13mm to adjust which makes it much much easier to fine tune the adjustment sitting in the driver seat. You can adjust with one hand vs two with the original clamp. Once you use the JWest clamp you will wonder why nobody ever thought of it before!

Agreed Steven is a very nice and dedicated guy. I had questions about some old solid chain tensioners he made, which didn't fit what I was working on. He took the time to call me & talk about them. He provided some advice on how much to machine them so they'd work for my situation. Good guy.

I've had the entire Wevo shift kit installed for 13 years now (or so). It's been absolutely flawless the entire time and transformed the way the car shifts.

![]() We have made coupler bushes in Delrin for about 8 years now as they always seemed a good idea and have less stiction than a standard bush. We made the gear lever bush in Delrin and attach it to the lever with a snap ring and the same for the shift rod support held in place with a simple locking ring. Using hard plastic eliminates the need for grease and it doesn't gum up. |
