Mystery parts in my door

A short while ago I jumped in my 88 911 Cab and ran the driver's window down. I heard a clank that sounded like a metal part had dropped to the bottom of the door. I gingerly ran the window up and it seemed OK. All other operations of the door still seem normal.

Today I took the door apart, using the tech article from our fine host. In the bottom of the door were the parts in the attached picture. They may be unrelated but they were sitting next to each other near the front of the door. The metal part seems to be of aluminum. The flat part is a pliable plastic part made of two nested pieces with a slot through the middle.

The plastic part looked like it could be part of the door arrester but I'm not sure.

The metal part looks kinda bent and twisted. I could not find a home for it. The scissors mech for window looked OK and had no similar parts in sight. Nothing seemed loose or wobbly. The window motor is hard to see but what I saw of it looked intact.

I consulted my PET CD and could not I.D. these parts. After patching the plastic sheeting, I just put it all back together.

Any thoughts?

Yup, part of your regulator. If your window works ok, it's possible this part was replace by the PO. I think is a right of passage to have these fall out of the door.

Yep, did that. Maybe I'm searching on the wrong words. I tried window, regulator, door, motor etc. Found somewhat related posts but nothing definitive. Kinda hard to do a search on a picture which is really all I had.

Oh Haha,

Thanks, maybe it is an old broken part but I think I heard it fall off. Maybe I'll just let it go until it stops working. I see that Stoddard rebuilds regulators. They are only 1 hour away from me(they originally sold my 911).

That slotted part is where the spring for the window winds around.

OBED,

Wow, could it still work with that part twisted off?

My windows work just fine after collecting the piece on the left from the bottom of both doors. I guessed that piece could have been used for the manual windown crank??

It probably got left in there with a previous repair. Assuming that your window works ok now. I actually peened mine back on (it was crooked) and closed the slot when I serviced my window when the glass came out of the bottom holder on a freezing day. PIA repair.

SC,

Thanks for the links! It looks like a fairly common problem. Both windows go up and down at the same speed. Maybe the spring tab is snagged on something else and didn't lose much tension.....or the part is left over from a previous repair. I definitely heard the part fall. On the other hand, maybe the same part has been lying in the bottom of the other door since before I bought the car.

Now, to take the door apart again.

Yup, this forum is invaluable. The search function is nice but the friendly advice and direction from other members is what makes it really work.
