Paint job costs???
I am looking at getting a 69 912 that is in great condition, but the paint is pretty dated and in need of attention. I have called around the local area, and have gotten ballpark estimates of around $6K and six to eight weeks. This is for a complete disassembly, strip down, color change professional paint job.
I have never had complete paint job done on any of my vehicles so I am a little green about costs and time. Does this sound to be at least fair? I would have posted this in the 912 forum, but it isn't frequented by as many people. Sorry. Thanks, Wayne |

For this area in California, that would be the deal of the century. Probably a good deal in Kansas, too.

If you have 6K and 6-8 weeks expect 8K and 10-12 weeks

How much more could I expect to pay for a dark metallic compared to a solid Black or Grey?
I've used Dupont on aircraft, and have been very happy. Those are High solids paints though so I don't know if it applies. What about BASF paints? That seems to be common around here. Thanks, Wayne |

6K in 6 weeks would be a great deal! Mine was twice that (both $$ and time) although it was worth the wait (and the $$)!
You just never know what parts, seals, rubber, handles, etc that you will need to replace once everything is torn apart. I ended up with rubber seals that appeared ok when assembled but crumbled to nothing once removed. Whatever the bid, make sure you figure 10%-20% over as contingency so you don't end up in a pinch.

As a general rule of thumb, 40 hours to prep, 8-12 hours to paint the exterior of the vehicle (this rule of thumb does not include interior doors, inner rockers or lock pillars).
This does not include the paint and materials and unforeseen dings, prior repairs, rust and new trim pieces. It would be best to remove all the windows, rubber seals, trim and get a complete repaint job. Replace these items once the painting is completed (you would be surprised how bad old rubber trim looks on fresh paint). It all depends on how much you want to pay or how good you want your vehicle too look when your project is done. The bottom line; prep is the key. How rough and overall condition of the exterior will determine the prep cost. The time to paint quoted is normal when painting smaller 2 door vehicles.

Paint cost
I went to three places to get an estimate on my 911. Based on all the hail damage cars in the area, no body shop was interested in taking on my car. I received estimates of 8k to 9K. This is with no rust problems or panel replacements.
I have spent about 24 hours removing all the windows, trim, front and rear bumpers, and what ever was removalable. This was a job because how old the car is. I am getting it painted next week. |

The guys who are advocating removing the windows, seals lights, bumpers, etc. (not the doors & fenders - you can get into trouble there) are right. If you have the space, time & fairly minimal skills, you can do it. I'll warn you right now it will take longer than you think, because "once you're in there," you'll end up doing a lot more than you intended or thought of. Great way to learn about the car though, and you'll probably do a better job at some things than the shop will because you will take the time. Don't ask me how I know.

Sounds like a fair price, to say the least. But choose your paint manufacturer. Of course, amke sure the shop is OK with them and have shot them before. I like Glasurit and Sikkens.

Cost me $ 10,000 and almost a year . Used single stage basf looks great. The car must be completely stripped. I would also get new headliner and such at this time.
