My 911 is a daily driver by default!

I just said goodbye to my trusty (new, still under warranty, luxurious) Subaru Legacy. So now I'm "left" with either 911 to use as a daily driver! OK, this really isn't bad, since I bought the SC with this (more or less) in mind, but now that reality is hitting, I'm a little nervous about it. I don't know why, I guess since the SC is a little new to me, I'm just not as certain about it as I have been with other Pcars. My mechanic did gave it a thumbs up (and we're fixing any leftover "needs" this week). Maybe it's the fact that it has no AC (none of my cars do now!). Maybe it's that yesterday I took off the "shark fins" and pulled paint off with it.

Maybe it's just that, for the first time in a number of years, I don't have a new car to cover for days when the old Porsche doesn't want to...er...perform up to specs.

..*sigh*..

Now I've typed all of that and come to the conclusion I have no idea what the point of this post is...

I think you will get used to it. Mine is also a daily driver (hence the screen name) and it's been pretty good to me besides the new synchros I had put it in $$$$

I would like to tell you though, from one 911 guy to the next, that a daily driver 911 is all good but for me it has a very unfortunate drawback. I dove my 911SC for 2 years as my daily driver. I drove it to work, out with friends, on dates, in the rain and even in the snow (it's actually the most fun you can have with your pants on). The problem is not with is ability, but like every good thing you build up a resistance. My car is a very tight, agile, mean 911 but after a while you start to lose it. It doesnt give you that same feeling. I cant say that it happeneds to everyone but it did for me, and it wasnt terrible but it did lose some of its excitement even when i was putting a little excitement in the driving. Point of the story: make sure you drive a honda once and a while before taking the 911 out.

My early 1969 E is my daily driver, but my commute (if you call it that) is about 7 miles at the most round trip. But there's no mechanic/parts for my car under 150 miles round trip that I know of, so I do all my own work. (Besides today's post where the starter jammed). So far this season, I've only had one problem, where I accidently left the parking brake on. So I ended up re-adjusting the brake myself in the garage.

To keep the ride fresh, usually the last day of the week I take the longer drive home.

^ Your joking right? The bay area in general is very easy place to live without an AC, let alone up the peninsula where you live.

Yeah, the next month is going to be a beyoch around here...we've been hitting the 90s with typical midwestern humidity. I'm hoping to survive it until it cools down. I get to work early, so the drive in won't be a problem. And coming home will be hot, but if I'm a little sweaty when I get home, who cares? (..well, maybe Julie.

) But if I have to run to see a client or something during the day...well I'm not sure how I'll handle that. I guess I'll worry about it when it happens. The good news is we're not far from Fall, which will be a terrific time to drive this car! Then I'll be fine until late November when I'll pick up a cheap winter car...probably an older Subaru Forester...like a $6k one.

Todd...yes, I pealed paint off!

The car had been repainted at some point, and I'm guessing they didn't let the paint cure very well before putting on those shark fin stone guards. Well I went to pull off the passenger side and it came off really easily. So I just went over to the other side and it came off just as easily, but pulled about a two inch strip of paint off with it! So now I have something else to fix. At least this won't prevent me from driving the car. And hopefully I can sit on it for a while until I have the $$$ to fix it. Otherwise I may have to get MAACO...

Anywho....

Come on Doug it's not that bad. I've been driving mine every day since April (about the sam time that my wife turned the air conditioning on at the house) w/o air and it's no problem. With the exception of hot, rainy days and getting stuck in traffic (not often in Dayton) it's great - the few times that I thought it was too hot I just remembered January and a smile went back on my face! The biggest drawback is the inevitable skin cancer on the forehead but hell, something is gonna get ya sooner or later.

Mine is a "daily driver", but my job doesn't require me to drive it everyday. I'll drive it to the airport, leave for two-four days and come back. Then I'll have a couple days to work on it if it needs it. I'm not a perfectionist, ask my wife, so I'll drive it with things that need fixin', but are not damaging...so that helps. Anyway, it's never left me walking in four years and there's only been one time when I didn't drive it and wanted to. It was on jacks for a clutch job...waiting for the fly wheel resurface.

Anyway, I really enjoy driving it and sometimes the thought of driving it, is the only thing that makes going to work possible.

I'm one of the several around here that are in the process of finding the right car. I want mine to be my daily driver, the commute is less than 10 miles. Now reading comments on A/C in a 911 I'm setting my self up for no A/C. So I've been practicing

by leaving it off. Its not too bad if I keep the speed up.

I just bought an '84 Toyota Landcruiser. It's got a four speed stick. After driving that thing around my 911 has never felt faster or more agile.

It is kind of ironic that, twice in the last twenty four months, I have had incidents which left me driving the old E for two weeks as my main mode of transportation. Since I have it registered as an antique, one is not supposed to drive it to work, but the co-workers get a kick out of it. The drive is only about 5 miles, one way and, unlike some other opinions expressed, I like to drive the car more. I currently drive about 2000 kilometers annually.
When I drive the car only occasionally, I lose that 'connected' feel which allows me to drive without the conscious review of every little suspension movement and wheel twitch. (to say nothing of the fun of shifting a 901 gearbox) Once I have 'relearned' the feel of the steering and the supple action of the suspension, it becomes a car built for a greater purpose than decorating my garage.
