And so it seems that the 'mid' year cars are a logical choice for modifying on a budget Budget? What "budget" would that be? Not to challenge your comment but looking at these cars and the staggering costs of upgrades like motors, suspension, track gear and more it seems more a weight/style preference than a budget choice. It is true however that you can find a middie (project or starter car) at basic affordable prices rather than starting on those upgrades on a newer car (at $30K or more Personally I could own a much newer Porsche (and have) considering the 10's of thousands I've put into my little '75 over the years. What I have now is a tight, fresh motor and total car set-up that I know every little grut and squeak on. What would I have for $35-40K? A newer car, sure, higher insurance rates, absolutely, and a car that needs even more extensive upgrades, repairs and up-keep to match the performance and road-worthyness of my 32 year old sweetheart. "Budget?" I think I klnow what you mean though. It's all relative to what you start with I guess...

I certainly agree with a stock '74 Carrera being a thing of beauty. Porsche cars, in well preserved stock condition, any model, any year, are beautiful to serious Porsche addicts like us and to casual passers-by.
Austin, when are you in Casa Grande? Do you bring the P-car out? If so you're welcome to come drive with us sometime. PM if you're interested.

Couldn't agree with you more. I think EVENTUALLY Mid Year cars - especially, but not exclusively - the stock, numbers-matching restored ones WILL be worth increasing amounts of money. But it's gonna take a long time and wouldn't be a good reason to buy a MidYear. There was a time when you could buy garden variety 356's for relatively low prices. At the same time an early Carrera would have been available but at considerably more money...more than an average enthusiast could have hoped to afford. The average guy bought the 356, restored it, played with it. And if he had done it "right" and held it long enough he realized a LOT of value growth. Now I'm not claiming there's anything like a direct correlation betwen Middies and 356's value wise. Maybe they'll never be seen as valuable as Earlies or even SC's. I just think if you bought a good one or restored one to a high condition and kept it l o n g term, you'll eventually realize a profit. I am doing that but to enjoy for myself. I may or may not realize a break even much less a windfall on the investment and I don't care. It's not why I bought mine.

I'm certain I screwed that quotation up, but you get the jest of it. If Jay Leno is the self confessed President of the "Too Much Money and Not Enough Brains Club", I am at least a card-carrying member of the "Loves Cars, But Not Too Much Sense Club". ...but then again judging from all these pictures, YOU'RE all members too!

A nice '72 T is more now costly than a similar 'base' 911 from the mid-years. I agree, that 'budget' is perhaps an oxymoron in the context of modifying Porsches. In regard to future values, I may be modifying my Carrera, but I'm keeping the original parts -- 'just in case.' And I do love my 'not so early' car... much more than my old 3.2s or RS America. Way more fun to toss about (quicker on the track, too). |

75Carrera and Cfries, thanks.
Mine is #266. Originally the car was from Santa Monica. Very original car when I got it, even had original window sticker. Had the engine completely redone starting with the case sent to Competition Engineering. Than SC cam grind from webcam, RS pistons and cylinders, RS distributor, fly cut heads, SSI's, everything else new$$$$ and kept going - etc etc. Car is very very fast!!!! Cfries, is your car yellow???

Hi CARRERIC, no, its the white with red Carrera lettering (pictured in this post with Homestead Miami Speedway in the background. I have a 2.8L but no details on whats inside. I can say it has a 38mm intake with 46 Webers with solid chain tensioners and upgraded cams. Just got back from VIR at a DE event and it does very well. I am the fourth owner and I know the last two. the first owner was a Minnisota Vikings hall of famer Chuck Foreman who also played at UM. The second owner knew him (was his sport agent). I am now trying to document the owner history of the car. I have about 140,000 miles on the car, but not the motor.

Here are a couple of shots of my 2.7 '77. I've owned it since 2003, and its fairly stock, with most of the notorious mid-year issues having been long ago resolved on it.
I think that the mid-years are a great bargain, compared to equally priced SCs and Carreras. Unfortunately the engine gave these cars a bad reputation. But as it appears most of us posting here have figured out, either fix those issues, or do an engine swap, and hot rod it. Oh, and my car just turned 275,000 miles!
