Engine Identification ? ? ?
I recently purchased a 1975 911 3.0.
But when removing alternator last week I discovered that it had the later Bosch unit with a built in voltage regulator. So I assumed it was an upgraded alternator on an older engine. But then this weekend I went about changing the oil and discovered that the engine had no sump screen, it just had a bung to the left hand side of case. I believe this is a change porsche made quite some time after 1975. Does anybody know what year and engine size this is. The case number is 930 101 104 5R and the fan casing is 930 106 667 4R. Thanks Niall

Best way I know is to look on the right side of the Alternator stand - you may need a torch and you should see something like 930/??. I have a '74 with a '78 ROW 3.0 and it has a 930/03 type engine. Once you know that type number then you can work out what you have.

Definitely has the sump screen - where do you get the fan casing numbers from?

On top of the casing when you look directly down on the casing from above, beside the strap.

Those numbers in your first post are casting/part numbers. The engine number is to the right if the fan and is on the side (vertical plave) and the engine type number is on the flat just right of the fan housing. Search here for engine number location and you should find some pictures of exactly where to look.
Post both numbers and you will be told exactly what you have, assuming no engine mods were made from original.

Hey its like all my birthdays have come at once.
The guy selling the car knew zero about 911's (a little less than me at the time, but i'm learning fast). He told me it was 3.0 he had taken in on trade in. I got it cheap, because it was running like crap, he just wanted it gone as he figured it needed a lot of engine work from the running condition. I knew after a few miles it was only broken down HT leads. So I bought it, took it home, changed leads, plugs, filter, oil etc and its now sweet as a nut. This porsche is seriously growing on me. I must post some pictures soon. By the way, I assumed as I was told by seller that it was a 3.0L 1975 and bought plugs, leads etc for that model and fitted them. Is there a difference between the 3.0L 75 gear and the 3.2L 84 to 86 gear? Do I need to get different plugs?
