I just spoke with a fabricator friend of mine about creating a 911R replica fuel tank and he is up for a challenge...he owes me some trade work anyway. He typically builds custom motorcycle fenders and tanks but business has been slow so he is going to take a stab at Porshce tanks. I could do it but time is a factor and at this point I would rather just hand it over to him.

Now I need to dig up some photos of the steel 911R tanks. I know I have several but if anyone has any close up photos or especially measurements, that would be great!

We are going to start with a later model tank as there is a bit more meat to work witharound the edges. Anyone have one they want to donate to the cause or sell cheap?

Also debating on whether to do center fill through the hood, just center fill under the hood or leave the stock filler location. I have done a through the hood on my ST and although cool, it is kind of a PITA. Filling under the hood would be more of a PITA, but then again the stock location is not as cool.

Front fenders are out being media blasted and they will need some more minor rust repair but I won't know the extend till I pick them up tomorrow. Most of the issues are around the mounting surface where the fender bolts to the trunk flange. Again, I may be looking for some donor metal so if anyone has any fenders laying around, please let me know. They can be later model.

Some minor body work starts this week while I am on vacation but then things should speed up when I get back. I have a taget date for the first part of July!!!

Yep Bob, that is the one. I am thinking more and more that I will keep the stock filler location. That is exactly how I want my trunk to look. With the exception of a welded in strut tower brace. I am also removing all the hardware and will have it all CAD plated so it all has a new appearance.

Now I just need more time and money...

Don't stare a this pic too long or you'll be stripping the entire trunk compartment undercoating to bare metal...ask me how I know.

Thanks for the warning Bob... I am already screaming down that slippery slope! My trunk is almost fully stripped. I figure it is better to do it now before I have to work around fresh paint.

What are you using for new fuel breather lines. Mine were old and very hard. It looks like they used black braided rubber tubing in the pic above but in Boba's pic, they are clear. Clear is the correct type.

Also, what is the extra large heater hose for on the white car? My car does not have that.

I bought all new clear lines for gas tank ventilation, brake reservoir over flow, and windshield washer system.
Also, the large hose can be used for optional Webasto fresh air blower. Personally I don't think the blower is that functional but if you need an entire unit I can point you in the right direction. You have the big rubber plug in the smuggler's box which is suppose to be hard to find - I pulled one off a car at EASY along with a leather pouch cap that goes in the corner of the compartment. Ck to see if you have that if you're not going to run a system.

Chris I sincerely hope ( for my sanity) that was a couple of weeks work on the body or else I am going to be feeling entirely inadequate with how long my project is taking

Bob, I think I just found the color for my car, any idea what paint code is that orange one? Also any more pictures?

Actually about 4 days worth of work but I spent a week waiting for parts. I thought it would take less time than that but the fit of the aftermarket panels was less than ideal.

Once you make the commitment and dive in, it really goes pretty fast. I always tell people the two hardest parts are making the first cut and grinding the welds down. Everything else is just busy work in between.

I guess "somewhat small rust repair issues " is all relative.

I would imagine it is a stock color. Go here if you want your socks blown off:

I finally saw this car a couple weeks ago and it is really the ultimate SWB car...for me.

Thumbs up

Chris,

Is your dental work as fastidious as your body work? You must have some very happy patients!
