Falling out of love with my 911?

Due to some...well...boneheaded incidents on my part, both my wife's and my dailies are in the body shop (OOPS). I'm using my 911 as a daily; drove it all week last week.

Am I getting old, or becoming a 'poop'? When driving it as a daily, alot of the sparkle is running out of it. On a daily basis, it just is losing some of its luster. Am I losing my marbles or are there others who agree with me?

When I get both cars back; I'm going to put it up for a while - absence does make the heart grow fonder...

I know I will get knocked but I at times feel like you. At 59 it gets harder to get in and out, the noise gets to me, etc.etc. As many will recall I had a issue with my 4th gear popping out of gear. Long story short she has been in the shop for the past two weeks getting the tranny rebuilt. Im going nuts waiting for her to return.

Traffic? As a daily driver in heavy traffic my P-car would be of no interest to me.

Open roads and nice weather? Poop!

I know what you mean. Due to an incredibly dry and warm start of the summer here in Sweden, I have been using my 85 Carrera as a daily commuter. Little things start to bug me, mostly in town. The heavy steering wheel, the quirky 915, the rather heavy clutch and a need for revs to keep from stalling between lights.

Out in the country and on the highway however, it is still as lovely as ever.

Bottom line? It's more fun when you never have to go below second gear.

Well yeah, but that's like saying "I'm really not liking this hammer I bought to mow the yard, it doesn't do a very good job".

Using the 911 for a daily commute in traffic is the wrong tool for the job.

Can't fault the car too much. Take a run through some mountains at daybreak and report back.

I know what you mean.

I look forward to driving my Audi A6 2.7t every morning, but only look forward to the Porsche on the weekends. 911+BH traffic=bore..

Having used my 911 as a daily driver, I'd have to say that none of the luster has worn off. I've only had two instances in recent memory where I was stuck in ridiculously heavy, someone-better-have-died-type bumper-to-bumper traffic that I've lamented the heavy clutch of my car. Actually, it was my cramping left calf that was complaining. Otherwise, every time I get into the Porsche--no AC, crappy stereo, no cupholder--it's a joy.

When it was an -every other weekend- car I would start it up, wipe it with a cloth and put on the fwy for about 5 minutes; I couldn't get enough. But now that i have to drive it; not sure if it's what i want to.

My father (& Grandfather) were Porsche guys and they're both probably rolling over in their graves over my saying this, but the shine is not there after 1 week of forced driving. My wife said it best as she took it out on Sunday to do girl things. "I'm tired, it's a workout"

You guys who use as dailies are much better than me, I couldn't hack it; i'm pestering the body shop to get my daily back...

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't love my 911, it's just that i am not in love with it right now...(old fraternity breakup phrase)

I love my 911 for a daily. It doesn't see too much traffic. The only think I don't like about it in traffic is on a hot summer day watching the temp needle climb and climb and starting to get worried. Other than that it's a joy.

Nothing like sitting at a stop and being able to stretch your arms way up and through the targa opening.

Driving in SoCal makes ANY car a chore.

I could have a F355 or a McLaren SLR and I'd still hate driving around here for the day-to-day stuff.

Park it for a while, drive it only when it's fun and there's no traffic (like 6AM on a Sunday). Then you'll love it again.

Think I'm gonna have to call you a "poop!"

Several years back I had to use my 73 S as a daily driver, s/r, stereo, no a/c, and at that time it had a 2.7 motor in it.... I loved it.

It was spartan and bare bones.. every time I looked-up a Corvette or 5.0 Mustang wanted to take me on! I'm in a major metropolitan area and deal with the stop and go traffic, it's a pain but not bad enough for me to ever suggest that "I'm falling out of love with my 911!"

Let me flip the script, the 73S is laid up waiting for me to find time to get it back together... my 930 is in a similar situation... though not as in depth. My "well beaten" daily driver, (95 XJR) bores me to freaking tears!!... and it's got a/c, auto, and a cup holder!!! Go figure.

Not necessarily, this is why I added creature comforts to my daily driver which I can turn on and use of turn off and listen to the engine if I want to - my choice!

Good A/C (Griffiths Duehl Kuehl System)
Cup Holder
7" Bluetooth LCD Screen for Nav, DVD, Cell Phone (runs audio through car speakers and displays address book on screen) and back-up camera.
5.1 digital surround sound processor.
Sub box in trunk
2 amps

And, YES, its still very much a 911. All very stealthily done to retain stock look a smuch as possible.

Currently "listening to" Seinfeld DVD series (on season 9 now) on my daily commute in heavy traffic. 1 1/2 per one way trip!

Commuting in Porsche definitely becomes more work than play. One 20 mile commute during a Southern California rush hour and your left leg will be begging for the Tiptronic. For someone that occasionally commutes in his P, the "Tip" is a necessity in stop and go traffic and makes the commute a little easier. Anything to keep the love

Jeffrey, the reason is that you drove it as a DAILY DRIVER! I had to drive my Targa for a month while my daily driver was in the shop! I tell you drving a 911 as a daily in the MD,DC,VA area is no fun at all. It is a whole lot different attitude when drving for fun and you don't have to be anywhere at a certain time, but when you drive to work it is completely different attitude. I found myself getting pissed off and not enjoying the car at all. The one thing it got me was a speeding ticket and not because I was going fast for fun. So you see, maybe that is what did it to you...Who knows?

I generally drive my 911 more than 10,000 miles a year. I've driven it over 8,000 miles this year already. I find that I look forward to my drive to and from work each day when I'm in the 911, vs my Cobra. I don't think twice about a 1,000 mile weekend trip in it.

Regards,

Jerry
