Anyone have any insight on this one?
Upon looking at the parts page again I think it was the descriptor in the section that caught my eye: "...Before you decide to replace your fuel pump, make sure that your Red fuel pump relay, which is located on the relay board within the front trunk area, is functioning properly. Also be sure to check that your DME relay, 911 (1984-89), is functioning properly. Pelican recommends that you carry an additional DME relay, which is located just under the driver's seat, with you at all times..." |

Hey there,
Just skimming your thread. You may want to change the flywheel position and speed sensors. You can access them both with the engine in. The sensor leads (wires) become brittle with age and heat. I had several problems due to a poor/lack of signal. As for the red realy for the fuel pump, my 84 Carrera has both the red and the DME relays.... |

As for the red fuel pump relay - is it possible that it is mislabelled on the fusebox lid? I checked my Bentley and it lists the same relays: power windows, cruise control, horn, fog lights, and A/C blower. No mention of the fuel pump. ?Bizarre? Last edited by KatoKato; 07-25-2008 at 04:04 AM.. |

That's not how my '88 is. As referenced on the factory printout on my fuse box cover (part # 911.612.243.03), and going from the forward most relay towards the rear (A-G), they are labeled as follows:
A - Air conditioning (my A/C is removed, but I leave the relay there as a spare) B - Foglights C - Twin tone horn D - Cruise control (no CC on my car - missing) E - Oil cooler fan F - Booster fan G - unused Now my Bentley has them numbered 1-6 (with 0 being unused) from back to front: 0 - unused 1 - Footwell blower motors 2 - Oil cooler fan 3 - Cruise control 4 - Horn 5 - Fog lights 6 - A/C condensor blower Hope this helps... Remove the fuel injector's and have them overhauled, or replace with new.
The car will run like it's brand new!

Sorry for the delay in responding.
The problems I had with the Position and Speed Sensors were related to the DME. I had the fuel pump run with the key in the on position but no engine rotation. This leads to some serious fuel flooding. I also had idle surging but that was related to the DME itself, I believe. Anyway, there have been posts here about using the BMW Position and Speed sensors in place of the more expensive Porsche part number. I purchased the Porsche part from Pelican as I didn't want to take the chance that the BMW sensors would not work properly. |

Great thread! And look at the bright side: this beats looking for Carreras in a Gremlin!

Hi again Barrpete
I am researching the instrument lights fuse install... Is this the appropriate thread? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=105819&highlight=instrument+light+fuse I checked under the dash on the driver's side to inspect the headlight switch and mine is in a slightly different position: ![]() Instead of having three thick black/blue wires going onto one pole I have one thick black/blue wire going onto one pole and 2 wires (thick black/blue & thick blue/black) going onto the other pole. How do I proceed? ---got in there and realized that these are the wires that I'm after--- I am using needle-nose pliers to get at the poles.... should be sweet when it's done... Cheers, Kato Last edited by KatoKato; 08-14-2008 at 10:58 AM.. |

Here's a pic of my fuse panel:
![]() From left to right Cruise Control(Red), Horn(Black), Fog Lights (Black) - no fuel pump relay. So I'm assuming that not all Carreras have a fuel pump relay on the fuse panel? And that of course mine is located only in the DME relay? |

Finished the fuse job for the instrument lights today as per the above thread. I used needle-nose pliers to get the job done instead of removing the vehicle light switch....it was a snap! |

Back in the day, my brother in law bought a brand new Gremlin - (Levi's Edition!) Believe you me, there are no Carreras to be found in a Gremlin.

Looks like you found the right thread. And it seems you're now one up on me as I still have that one on my 'to do' list. Excellent tip on not removing the switch!

As seen in the pic I don't have that triangular piece of metal blocking the way which allows for use of the neednose pliers..... very good! |
