This brings to mind an interesting conversation I recently had.

I was preparing for a call for a business pursuit in Hong kong and mentioned the term, "ROW". My sales guy stated that it was uniquely american to call every country other than the US , 'ROW'.

For Porsche this is especially interesting since the car is manufactured outside of the US.

Do Europeans refer to US delivery cars as "ROW"?

Well I'm glad you asked - I had also been wondering. Mystery solved!

Silly expression. I wonder what US arse kisser came up with it. I suppose the discussion went something like: "Lets see...hm...its USA, Japan and perhaps one or two other countries and then there is...eh...Rest Of the World...

On the other hand we got the most ponies! I know its been said it was because of pollution laws, but I know the truth: Americans canīt handle more horsepower.

I know you're kidding but to answer the question (sort of), if there was a Japanese version, a US version and one for the rest of the world. Would you call it the "non Japanese, non US version"?

A ROW 911 may give a nice ROI. I was quickly typing the message and I pushed the wrong key.

You can blame Porsche for the ROW lingo, since they were the ones using it to begin with. As shocking as this may seem, it wasn't the US that came up with this notion, although you can blame us in a roundabout sort of way. We were the first country afflicted by excessive safety and emissions laws, which forced all manufacturers to create a "special" version of their cars just for us. After a few years, California residents got an "extra special" version to meet their ridiculous standards. Thus, it was simple to refer to the cars as US and ROW, as the rest of the world's countries were not in agreement with our standards.

If the term hadn't have been abused by the ricer crowd, we could probably more appropriately call the US version cars "A-spec".

I'm going to put that on my car now..."Porsche 911SC A-spec" in big shiny gold script right across the rear window I'll be the talk of the town...
