I want to tone down my exhaust

I've not changed the exhaust on my car since I bought it more than four years ago because I like it; or rather I liked it. I have SSI with a 2in1out B&B muffler. It is a little aggressive for street use. It sounds great inside the car, but when I run near a dividing wall I can really hear the sound bounced off the wall and it is loud. It attracts unwanted competition from the youger tuners. It sets off car alarms at times (oh well). It's just not the kind of attention I want from the PD as well. I'd like to have something a little more subdued while keeping the SSIs straight into some muffler. Any recommendations from those who've BTDT?

I doubt a stock muffler will fit on a 3.2 with SSI's, will it?

I'd agree with Webb, If your 2in1out is as loud as my 2in2out B&B then I know what your dealing with. I feel pretty bad about starting my car, even in the garage, anytime after 9PM. I'll be swaping it out to a Flowmaster or Dynomax in the near future.

Exhaust

I too have at times have been annoyed at the sound of my exhaust. I have a modded 3.6 with B&B headers and dual in/dual out. My typical work commute when I do not travel is 104 miles round trip. I have a few combinations that I change from time to time. I got this from a fellow pelican. The loudest combination is the twin 3" tips, a little quieter is the 2.5" tips or I will cap off on side completely and run the smaller tip. A little performance loss can be felt overall but my sanity at times is worth it. Try changing the tip size, it's inexpensive and easily reversible if you don't like it.

I have a 2 in 1 out B&B on B&B headers and I hate the thing. (Everyone else loves it including the wife!) I'm surprised a cop hasn't popped me yet...

I'm going to just build a muffler using more reasonably priced off the shelf components.

SSI heat exchangers are a direct replacement for early heat exchangers (up to '74). Thus the original factory type 2in/1out mufflers or aftermarket equivalents should fit. A 2in/2out sport muffler may or may not be as loud as your B&B.

I have a Triad "street" muffler on my car (3.2 with SSIs) and it is very quiet. It has a nice exhaust note, but is probably quieter than a stock muffler. Perfect for creeping out of my neighborhood at 6:30 in the morning to go to work. An added benefit is that it is probably one of the most inexpensive mufflers out there.

A stock '74 muffler will fit fine

I removed by cat bypass and replaced with Bens pre-muffler and it was a night and day change. Really tones things down.

I have B&B headers with a dual 4.5"outlet B&B muffler. That car is loud, but I got used to it. My friends find it really loud and obnoxious and told me of a product sold by Summit Racing to quiet it down. http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?Ntk=KeywordSearch&DDS=1&searchinresults=false&N=700+115&Ntt=exhaust+cone

It'll be interesting; I had two-chamber flowmasters on a 5.0L Mustang with no Cats and was very pleased with the idle sound level. It was pretty loud when you were on it but that was fine with me. I assume most people are using the two chamber 80 Series.

I would just get used to it but I believe something is wrong with my B&B internally. Very little exhaust comes out of the passenger tip. Covering that tip does practically nothing while it's very difficult to cover the drivers side tip and, even still, not much comes out of the passenger side.

I've got a B&B 2 in 2 out - I'll check the flow on the passenger side when I get home - now I'm curious.

I had new exhaust system w/too loud muffler. Speedwerks does racing porsches, so originally installed a gutted new muffler w/3.5" dia exhaust pipe and SSI headers.
Had migraine after 20 miles.
Teens loved it, wife and neighbors hated it.
kept SSI headers, and changed to M&K 2-in/1-out--works/sounds great.

BTW, I've got the stock muffler I'll give you cheap, if you pay the freight. came off an '87 3.2.

A Flowmaster will be loud, it's a nice loud but still loud. Dynomax has been reported to have a more mellow alternative

Somewhere along the line B&B started shipping mufflers w/ a passenger side out let the size of a dime. You can't see it because it is usually hidden w/i the depth of the passenger side outlet. Pull the outlet and you'll see it for yourself. When paired w/ the shoddy construction that was the last straw as far as I was concerned.
