I was in the process of re-installing the electric blower for the heater in my 78 SC after repairing it and decided not to since it takes up too much room.

So after checking out some of the heater back date threads got to thinking about fabricating an adapter to use on the existing duct coming off the engine fan housing,

So off I went to Lowes to look for some off the shelf items I could use.
I did not want to use plastic plumbing fittings and needed metal parts.
After thinking about what I could possible use, I went into the electrical department and found a 2" long radius conduit 90 degree ell.

I also needed something that would fit the 3 1/4" opening from the fan housing. So I found an shallow round electrical junction box that looked like it would work.

Bought the items and went home to start fabricating the adapter. I used a jig saw with a metal cutting blade to cut out the opening in the junction box. I also cut a section out of the 2" conduit to use.

I flattened out a section of the conduit that fit the opening in the junction box and cut it out then tack welded it to the box.

Went and did fit up on the fan outlet and made two miter cuts for my
the two outlets I needed. Did another fit up to see how it would work and then welded it all up.

You have to take your time and a low heat setting on your mig to weld the conduit pipe since it is so thin. I used flux core wire to weld it.

So I installed it, hooked up the hoses and so far so good. About $12.00 worth of fittings and two hours time.

Don't need a lot of heat down here in Louisiana since it never stays cold for very long.

Hera are a couple of photos.

Does anyone know if the heater backdate will work with a single cap 12 pin distributor? I was told no, but wondering if anyone has tried.
Application is in an 84 Carrera I have not chosen an exhaust for it yet but am leaning towards M&K/RarlyL8 headers with heat exchangers
Next up would it be possibe to use the right side only and split into both heat exchangers?

Hey all,

Been gone for awhile so looking for some help on this as far as most viable options...

As per this thread, our earlier options were to either purchase the metal backdate vents, which would facilitate modification of the left side with a hammer due to the distributor location (3.2), or the plastic vents which would also require modification with a heat gun.

Have I missed anything?

So the question is: has Pelican remedied this issue yet? Do we actually have a "plug-n-play" part that no longer requires modification for the 3.2?

Looking to complete a backdate ASAP, as I may be finally selling the '88 Cabrio for under current market (in case anybody is interested).

As usual, thanks to all for your help!!!

Get the turbo version of the same duct. A bit more money, but no clearance issues with the distributor.

Welcome back Stone,

As per my post (#34).

Installed the dizzy first, then the duct and then wire 3 & 5.

Yeah, got it JJ. I want to see if I can pick up the plastic 930 version if I can. If I can't, I'll go with the metal PP version and remove the dizzy.

Just to confirm: the A/C bracket has to be removed as well, n'est-ce pas? Is that going to be a PITA?

gliding_serpent 02-06-2016 06:26 PM

I got a metal 930 version from my local porsche dealer. I do not have the part number on me. I got it a little over one year ago.

Im looking to a heat back date. Does any one have the 911 hot air sockets. I need both left and right. Many thanks.

Reviving this old thread with a word of caution. I'm back dating the heating system in my 1980 SC to work with my ITB setup. Like others have experienced, the aftermarket left side duct doesn't fit properly. This one was from eBay. I've posted a photo of the original plastic duct to show the significant gap left by the new part.

I recall reading about someone fitting individual fans (computer fans?) directly on top of the hose coming from the heat exchangers, thus removing the central fan and additional hoses on the SC and up engines, and not needing to install the ducts from the shroud in a backdate. But now I can't find that reference.

Can anyone provide it?

I bought the same piece from our host. fitment is just trash on my SC. I have the same gap as you but also the mouth where ducting would connect is angled too far down and contacts oil lines so there's really no way to even get the ducting on. I may try to rework it with a hammer when i find some time.

if someone is aware of a backdate plate for drivers side that fits correctly let me know.

I also made my own plate for pax side that fits in behind the AC bracket comfortably. I have the parts to make 3 more so if anyone needs LMK.

I'm using the standard plastic duct on the passenger side. Will this work with the stock A/C bracket?

looks like it will clear. The one I made has a similar exit angle. Where did you order that one from? Most sites I've seen they look this:

and clearance seems questionable.
