Wheel size questions

I have a 1986 911 carrera non turbo with stock flares.... I'm wondering what max size tires I can go without having to weld on some steel flares, I have 205's on the front and 225's on the back right now and it looks like theres maybe between an inch to an inch and a half of space on the rears before i touch the fenders......any ideas on how big I can gow without adding on flares?

255/17 is a popular size for the rear of SC/Carreras with standard flares.

265/45 will fit but that size is pretty slim in a street tire.

If you have stock 16 inch wheels the biggest issue is finding tires in a "fat" size that will work.

The tire diameter for our cars is right around 25"

here's mine with 245/45/16 with Sumitomo tires.I also have a .25 spacer installed.

I just installed a set of 9 inch wheels with 245/45/16 tires on the rear and 225/50/16 tires on 7 inch wheels this weekend on my 89 Coupe with no issues... I will be lowering the car to "euro" specs as soon as i replace all four original shocks with new Bilsteins.
Right now i'm running a two finger gap between the top of the tires and the fender lip
front and rear as that is the lowest i could go for now without any rubbing...
Had to go for a few test drives and readjust the front height as anything lower than that would rub on the tires over bumps !
There is no concern whatsoever with the rear,the front is a little touchy with "tired" 20 year old shocks...

I do: 255/40/17 in the rear, 225/45's up front. But, I had to raise my car a bit in the rear to clear the LH side.

I suggested the search button, as there are alway's some asterisks and "buts" with this question on max sizing.

Check out the new Kumho XS tires. The have a 265/45/16 that will work on a 9" rim. Is it suposed to be at the top of the heap on the near R type tires.

One of the best proven set ups seems to be 205/245's.

As Jack says, 275 17's is the widest rear and is what a lot of the PCA stock class guys are running. It should require rolling the fenders and might require moving the oil lines. Not an expert in this.

It worked for me...
The problem is to find a tire company that makes the matching sizes for the front and back !
I found that TOYO with their Proxes T1R makes a wide variety of sizes and i'm glad i chose them because they are a lot smoother and quieter over road irregularities than the Michelin Pilots i had on previously.
I've still got the the 20 year old original shocks on the car... i just recently purchased it and will be replacing all four next weekend... but i have a two finger gap all around between the tires and fender and nothing rubs !
Will lower it slightly more after shock replacement !
